This is not solved. None of those recommendations make any difference. The material database/ browser is extremely slow to open if you have more than a handful of materials defined. Revit users (world wide) are asking the Autodesk developers to address this issue, or at least reveal which specific aspects of material definitions may be impacting performance so that we may stand a chance of working around the defect until it is fixed.
Hi @EBowman2
Please make a separate post on this issue.
Specify version and build number.
Also, can you please post a journal and a screencast of what you are experiencing?

Why make a new post on the issue if the original question is not answered?
This has been a problem for Revit for as long as I can remember. (4, 5, 6 versions?) I've used Revit since 2004.
Please post a link to the new thread if that's how this conversation is being continued.
Same here, nothing changed in Revit 2020.. Every version 2017,18,19,20 takes at least 30sec to open! If i want to paint wall in multiple views, it's very frustrating!!
Apparently someone pushed the "Accept as Solution"-button? 🙂
Hi @esatis and the community facing similar issues,
The reasons for a slow material browser could be specific to each user/machine.
Generic causes have been posted above.
Please contact support to take a closer look. I will talk to development and see if there are any updates to share!

This is not an acceptable answer. Certainly a faster machine will open the material browser system quicker than a slower machine, but it doesn't even reach a level of "bearable."
My current workstation is almost as high-end as is currently available, and the material system continues to be pathetically slow. The ONLY response to this ongoing headache is for Autodesk to ADMIT the material interface is POORLY programmed and needs to be recreated from scratch.
This continues to plague our staff, on myriad machines, using both Revit 2017 and 2019. It also affects the time it takes a Revit file to open. Under normal circumstances, the file will take 90 seconds to open, and the material browser will open in 3-5 seconds. Then, one day, the file will take 20 minutes to open, and the material browser will take 8-10 minutes to open each time. This will last for a day, or a week, or a month, then just as suddenly will go back to normal again. It is clearly not a hardware issue (RAM, graphics card, etc), as it occurs sporadically, and it is specific to the file, as the problem will be company-wide on a particular file for the duration of the issue. Then it will correct back to normal for everyone for a few days, then back to terrible again. Different files will have this issue at different times, but all files are ultimately affected.
It is a huge issue that needs to be resolved.
Same thing here,
I Have a 2018 Hp Z4 workstation with a Quadro GPU, and it take arround 1 to 2 minutes to open the material browser
what a waste of time ...
AUTODESK, please stop adding more uselees features to REVIT and optimise what is allready here

Autodesk admitting anything? In dreams, haha :=
It was working decently for a while. After latest update for 2020 it is remarkable and noteworthy how poorly it works :D.
Can someone remove the "ACCEPT SOLUTION" from this post??? How about you Autodesk???
FIX THIS GARBAGE before you say it is resolved.
I can add that the material browser in Revit LT 2019 was fine. It only noticeably taxed my computer when I used the Paint command. The fan would start operating heavily.
However, upon updating to Revit LT 2021, I noticed the issues you all have listed when I'd open the material browser itself.
Does Autodesk not test its new versions before putting them on the market? Slow material browsers, burnt looking trees in Realistic mode, poche issues in Realistic mode, etc. No bueno, Autodesk!
I went into the manage tab-> in the settings section-> "purge unused" and do not specify to only materials. it will only remove things that you are not using. I did this about three times, and now my material browser pops up instantly. (I also had the problem of the 10 minute wait.)
