Revit LT 2017- text editing issues

Hi,

I'm having some issues when editing text - particulary on the sheet (not so much in legends or draft views).

The cursor is in a completely different position to where the text is entered. If I press the left arrow key the cursor moves right!

Very annoying 😕

The attached screen grab shows the cursor just before the word '|FENCE'  and the text is entering after the word 'LOW'  'ddd' is my new text.

Any hotfixes?

Please post or IM me case number if anyone has already reported it already and I will help to ensure this gets routed to the correct team.

To make the process go as efficiently as possible, Please add a journal file, Revit file and reproducible steps (if possible)

There is a similar sounding variation of this issue that has been reported and we would want to know if this falls into that bucket.

Thanks everyone.

Jeff, not wanting to be contrary but I have never been told by the person handling my case that SP2 will resolve it. All I got was a case closed email. When I installed both SP1 & SP2 the text box issue was not mentioned in the notes for either. As far as I know the fix is yet to come, hence my comment regarding time.

Regarding software conflicts, if you mean other software on my computer, in the spirit of trying to solve the issue, I have tried a fresh install on a second machine that is very different from the one I operate from, and runs different other software. Same issue exists with newly created files and older files.

Maybe a simple fix for AutoDesk would be to replace the text module with the pre 2017 module until they can solve it. Alternatively, throw us a version of 2016 that can read our 2017 files.

This is a complete balls up! Minus 10 to AutoDesk. I can honestly see myself looking for alternative software if this isn't resolved soon, the cost in productivity is huge.

Michael, thanks for your help. The case is Case ID: 11954086

I have now resubmitted the case. I have previously submitted files etc. as suggested.

I hope that this is resolved soon as I do not appear to be alone by a long shot. I have loaded the software onto a second different machine to see if that would solve it but with no success. Since SP1 & 2 the issues are the same with both new and older files.

Cheers,

I do not know specifically what happened on your previous case. I am not part of the Product Support team so I don't have direct visibility into their cases.

I responded to this thread with the suggestion of installing the service pack because I know there were some issues around the new text editor that were identified and resolved with the service pack. The issues described in this thread sounded very similar, so I suggested a possible fix. This does not appear to have resolved the issue you are seeing. I am only left to assume there is some other yet unidentified issue with the new text editor, that is why I suggested working with Product Support so they can help identify the issue you are currently experiencing.

I did send a message to the Product Support team and Michael has added to the thread to help further with the issue. I hope he is able to get to the bottom of it an resolve the problem for you.

The patch but I only changed to revit 2017 a week ago so I just assumed it would be working out of the box.

I understand there are bugs etc.

David:  I have been experiencing the same issues as you and had a case reviewed by Autodesk and then closed.  Although they were polite, they used my file and did experience the missing text issues. 2017 Revit Architecture seems to reset margins of text after closing out and returning to views, models or legends.  Autodesk's final response to my case is that new projects cannot be starting by saving previous projects.  By the way, new projects suffer the same text issues as old projects.

For me, the text editor sometimes will not let you correct even a misspelled word and requires retyping the complete text.  Lines of text and columns of text disappear when returning back to the model, drafting view or legend which they were created.  One must constantly restretch the margins to reveal missing text.  Very frustrating on 80 page set of drawings and loss of billable time to constantly correct the buggy software.

For the record, SP1 and SP2 have been installed on both my MS Surface Book and MacPro (Bootcamp) computers. They suffer the same experience.  Text is one those critical functions required for preparing Contract Documents and do not think Autodesk has not fully recognized the issue. Since the issue is prevalent in 2017 Revit LT and 2017 Revit Architecture, it must be a problem across the software platform. And no 2016 Revit software can never be rewritten to read 2017 Revit files.

Hi David,  I wanted to give an update on Case ID: 11954086.  You likely already got correspondence from the ticket as well.

I was able to confirm with the development team that your file attached to Case ID: 11954086 has been fixed in 2017 R2 and future. Please note that actual release dates are not known at this time but it is scheduled for sometime in October.

very similar variation to this issue was was fixed in 2017 SP2 but not the exact issue that was manifested in your file.

The workaround in your case (which I believe you already know)....

Close View and Reopen view without activating/deactivating view on sheet.

Michael, thanks for your reply. At last I now know that the issue was not fixed and to stop trying to fix it at my end. If I had been told that previously by the team handling my case it would have helped. It is a long time until October, 6 months out of 12 into the life of the release and it will be solved. Very poor performance on such a major issue. It is quite difficult when trying to work quickly to a deadline to remember the work arounds... let's just get R2 out sooner, or at least if we know what the issue is and it is solved, how about SP3 in the interim?

By the way, have just read an email from support re the case I re-opened due to SP2 not fixing the issue. I have some issue with the content as it acknowledges that the issue is not fixed and then closes the case! Saying that it will be fixed in R2 with an October timeline is not enough to close this ticket. It should be closed when the issue is fixed, not on an assumption it will be. As I have said, release SP3 if the team knows what the issue is and has a solution... my gut feeling is that they don't, but are hoping to have one by October.

AutoDesk is letting itself down.

Cheers,

David

Hi arcitekt,

in some way it is good to know that you share the issue and have tried different machines aslo. After a few weeks of my ticket being closed and advised that SP2 will fix it, I am being told by AutoCad that it wasn't, but it will be in R2 in October. Without making noises here that info would never had been relayed to me. Having reported the issue and providing files for them to work on I am appalled that I was not kept in the loop. OK, rant over, but my comment about re writing 2016 was really just to emphasize the seriousness of the issue for me, I know it can't be re written 🙂

Cheers,

David

We are also experiencing this horrid bug. Autodesk took the time to address some of the Revit text issues in 2017, but honestly, this bug makes it worse than before. Very difficult to edit text on the screen now and it happens all the time. To reproduce the error: just use Revit, it always happens.

PS: Already using SP2, so that does not fix it.

I can't believe the line on this issue just died!

What is the fix Autodesk?  We are paying a huge amount of money for a now broken text editor.....you fixed nothing!!!!

To All:

Since I was one of the first to claim a case on the text editor issue, it is still not fixed. A sample drawing was provided and they could verify the conditions that I was experiencing. Autodesk closed the case because they stated that every Revit drawing must start from scratch and not be converted from an older version of Revit. That is wishful thinking on behalf of Autodesk because most everyone copies something from another drawing or starts from a previous template.

The problem is now affected my professional business because building departments are now commenting on missing text.  It is just is not possible to widen every text dialogue box and add extra blank lines to column of text so that the text does not disappear every time while editing in the software every time the file is opened.  Simple things like room names do not display their complete name i.e. (Dining Room shows up as Dining).

I simply cannot understand why the software can display the complete when created text, but close and reopen the file and text disappears.  My clients think it is carelessness on my part, but the issue is the software.  It is almost 10 months living with this issue and maybe 2018 Revit will finally fix it.

Additionally, this does not even include editing simple text on drawings in the editor when the cursor cannot be placed where text needs to corrected or edited.  Every short note must be retyped from scratch most times.

We have found that the majority of text issues have been solved, but there is one new one (or maybe we didn't notice it before because back then it would have been relatively minor compared to other problems)... open a previous text box for editing, place cursor to insert additional text, type text...nothing happens! Need to highlight a section of text before being able to insert new text. It is very frustrating and time wasting & Time = Money.

Very disappointing performance by AutoCad this release, let's hope that 2018 release fixes it, but something tells me it is unlikely to.

Hello, I am also having this issue. It is repeatable through multiple Files.

Perhaps this is important, I am running Logitech Peripherals, MX Master Mouse and keyboard with Logitech unifying software, and Logitech control.

Hope any of this helps you developers. This issue is very frustrating.

This is happening to me in an upgraded project (one that was originally created in 2015). It does not matter if it is a new text box or editing text that was created in 2015 - the cursor starts all the way right and as I type, it fills in from the left (like normal).  Try to edit that!!!!  It's all over the place!  I am dead in the water - I cannot edit any text because I do not know where I am in the text.  And of course - it is too late to go back to the project in 2015!

Are you using the Autodesk Desktop App to make sure you are always running the latest versions?

May I recommend keeping things as Parametric and Associative as possible and staying away from Text on Sheets. Limit Text to Views and or Legends.

Most of us have found that Keynoting per Material and Element is single-handedly the biggest way to save time on any project as well as using many Keyboard Shortcuts.
