Revit is Slow?!

Is it just me or has Revit become a really cumbersome program? I mean it doesn't really matter what you do in Revit, each action brings up the 'spinning circle' for either a short instance and sometimes long?! Drag a wall, edit a family, copy a door etc etc.

Yes I know what you are thinking, something to do with my setup:

HP Z640 Workstation

Intel Xeon CPU 2.20Ghz

RAM 32Gb

NVIDIA Quadro M4000

Nope, happens on all Revit where ever i may be including my collegues and even the resaler agrees it is so.

Have we just become so used to it and have stopped complaining?

In this day and age you would expect not to have to wait for your computer+ programs to finish 'thinking'?!

What is the size of your model ?

Everything from small villas 50Mb to large hospitals 1,5 Gb, however generally around 200-400Mb

.....it doesn't really matter.... that is the strange thing, it feels like so much info is interconnected that everything takes a lot of calculating, guess it's the nature of the program but still a little frustrating.....

I mean you must have experienced this too, how long does it take for you to open a project in general, several minutes surely, is that ok?

Are the models located locally on your own pc or somewhere on a server or in the cloud? Because there might be the bottleneck, since your beefy pc, if everything runs correctly, shouldn't be the bottleneck like you described.

Maybe a network problem.

Did you have the same problem when the project is on your own HDD.

Speaking of harddisks, I assume your workstation is using SSD's ?

The program has not gotten slower.

This is most likely a hardware or hardware configuration problem. If you are on a network, try a different network connection.

I don't think @vincent is saying that Revit is becoming slower.

He is saying that Revit is just slow!

It could be his PC (clock speed isn't the fastest) but we have to admit that Revit sometimes isn't as fast as we would like it to be.

I am doing rebar detailing and I think it will cost me my mental health if I cannot find a way to do it a lot faster (again I spent a whole weekend annotating)!

Waiting (sometimes over 10 sec.) is driving me mad.

Not to mention the things that Revit should do automatically.

It certainly sounds like that is what he is saying but that would be on him to say either way.

As to your issues, they may be totally unrelated to the OPs issue(s). I'd suggest starting your own thread as to not confuse the issues.

Files are locate both locally on a network, on Revit Server and on a network through VPN.

I use the computer speced above, I haave used an older computer and 2 different laptops + I have 5 collegues using their own computers all experience the same.

Are you telling me you don't you experience any lag what so ever (double click a door and bang the family opens, move a door or wall and bang it moved?) I'm talking about lags that take 1, 3, 5 seconds to execute........

This is what i'm saying, i don't believe it is a problem but simply a fact of 'Revit life'....it's been like taht in all versions I have worked with......however that doesn't mean we can't ask for improvements 🙂

I don't think that is a good option.

Did you try putting your files local and see if there is any difference ?

I thought about network speed because 10 years ago when I started using Revit, the network we were on was was only 10/100. I started calling Revit, "Click and Wait". I didn't mention it as I assumed that these days, everyone should be on at gigabit speed. If the OP is not, it is definitely time to upgrade.

Sorry to hear that you are facing issues!

The first thing to check is if you have the latest updates installed for your Revit version. (Check your Autodesk desktop app for recent updates)

Here is an article which touches on a lot of reasons for slow performance in Revit. There are some steps to try such as disabling add-ins that you can try. For graphics cards, please reference the certified list of cards that have been tested with Revit.

Thanks for the input Viveka, however I believe my Revit and PC are completely up to date and the latest and best there is (within reason) and that everything is working as it should and I guess that is the problem :).

I don't want to get rid of any possible add ins that I have because I need them (not that I have many) and I don't want to change any of the network and other setups that I have because that is how we want and need it to function.

What I need is for Revit to be developed/streamlined to avoid these small lags. Each lag individually might be only a small thing but add all these small lags together over the working day and it amounts to huge losses of effective CAD time.

Once again, ever since starting with Revit about 10 years ago it has been so and I guess everyone simply has accepted it, however I just want to lift the issue and see if more of my fellow CADders feel the same way......apparently some do :).

I'm only interested in making our working experience as positive as possible and for that Revit needs to evolve, because the competition won't sit back and wait.....

(I have also worked extensively with Microstation, ArchiCAD and Vectorworks so I have quite a good pesrpective on this kind of issue).

100/100Mb with most files on a local network. However I work with several files directly on my harddrive.

VPN from home to our local network at work, Revit still works the same there......as it should.

Revit Server on local network with accelerators and another revits server slave at a different office in another city.

We use it all :).

Using families from a remote server (at the other office) can cause long waiting times (minutes) as can exporting IFC files to the remote server (tens of minutes) however i understand that this has nothing to do with 'Revit under the hood'....

Revit can only access the files at the speed your network allows.

If you have a slow network, Revit will be slow.

Best and easiest way to test how fast Revit really is is to put your files on your pc and re-link them to your pc.

But I think you know that already.

I have a football stadium (260mb file from an external firm) and the last time I opened it it took about 20 minutes!

Could be the way it is set up, could be a huge template file, could be global warming, ...

I have seen that third party add-ins can be a big problem.

You will never know if you don't want to try changing things.

I think you know that your problem is rather network related than Revit.

You are talking about some models that are over 1 gigabyte!

If you have to pull this from a slow network or network server...

I Always put my work local if I work at home but I can understand that it is not Always possible.

If I can choose between a slow (or even a fast) network or a solid state (M.2) I wouldn't doubt about it.

Luckily I have rather small files and I am the only one in our office who is using Revit (rest is Tekla).

But I have to admit that even with my rather small files I sometimes can pull my hair out of frustration (especially with large rebar sets).

Like you said, we became used to waiting but I am very stubborn and I never give up trying to get the most out of my system.

100Mb LAN is too slow for this day and age. That is your bottleneck right there.
