Revit.ini read only message

I am trying to change the location of the tabs in the top toolbar and it is never saved because I receive a message that the Revit.ini is read only. I cannot find such a file that is read only anywhere on my computer.

Any idea?

Copy the revit.ini to another location, edit that file and save it. Then copy it to the original location.

You may have Hidden folders unchecked.  Check the box below and browse to Revit.ini following the path, right click on it , Properties and make sure it's not Read-only.

Hi @FinearcLtd

Revit uses 2 versions of the Revit.ini file:

1) UserDataCache folder

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\<product and release>\UserDataCache

2)User Profile folder

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Revit\<product name and release>

The Revit.ini file contains settings that define variables, paths, recent files, and other settings for the Revit software, it is recommended that you always make a backup copy of Revit.ini before making any modifications, and please un-check the read-only settings as highlighted by @ToanDN

thank you all but this does not work on my machine. For some reason it refuses to uncheck the read only check box. My computer support company tried to figure it out but without success. It is truly annoying and I can't figure out why each time I uncheck the files they become checked automatically.

Mistery to me...

Any ideas?

Hi @FinearcLtd

Which version of windows are you using?

  • Did you try logging in as an admin?
  • Can you copy the file and folder to desktop, and try editing it?
  • On you folder properties, Go to the security tab, chose edit, find the user and then tick the box which says write. Can do this for file by file or for whole folders.

Let me know if this helps!

If nothing works with the file permission, boot a USB OS and edit that file. For example this one:

Hi @FinearcLtd

I just wanted to follow up here, any progress on this issue?

  • Can you test Revit with all add-ins disabled?  Followed by installing the plugins  one by one and see if any of the recently added plugins cause that error?
  • Send us a journal file to troubleshoot further.

Let me know if you have any questions.

This has happened to me a few times. I untick read only, go back into Revit and it says it is read-only. I go back, check the file and it is ticked again. I don't have an explanation for it, but I always get it fixed with persistence, trying it a few times. It's almost as though it is locked in cache. I always close Revit though, weird.

Yep. Always close Revit before you do it.

Thank you all for your help but so far no results. The Revit.ini file is not ticked as read only and I still get this error message. No addins installed in the 2018 version appart from those that come with the original software. In the end, I am still unable to save any configuration changes. I don't have this problem with other workstations, only mine! a true riddle!

Hi @FinearcLtd

Since you've mentioned this only happens in your machine, please send us a journal file to troubleshoot further.

Hi @FinearcLtd

The default path for Revit 2018 would be:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 2018\Journals

Let me know if your are able to send the file.

We have had the same issue on some 2016 and now a 2017 install.  Our fix was go to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Revit. There should be a folder for each version of Revit that contains your configuration settings.  In our case the version in question had a file with the same name rather than a folder.  By renaming that file (simply put an X or something at the end) and then re-launching Revit the folder was created and the config settings visible inside.  Once that file exists you can edit your settings from back in Revit like usual.
