In a Section view or in an Elevation view. Draw a Reference Plane through the column. Use the ribbon tool Modify > Geometry > Cut to cut the Column with the Reference Plane.

Chrisplyler, I do not think you will be able to use this method as it is a Concrete Column.

Depending on where you want the column to be "cut", you could build this into a family. with an extra extrusion and parameter controlling the angle.

without know exactly your issue its difficult to help.

Dear chris

yup.
i try to use Modify > Geometry > Cut this method before.

this function is not suitable for cuting sturcture column.
i try to open new family file to crerate new concrete columnn as the project.
but i think this method is very slow.

Here is a video of me doing it. Structural Column. Concrete. Quick and easy.

Hi Chrisplyler,

The reason you are able to do that is because it is a precast concrete column and in the family the "Material for model Behaviour" paramater is precast concrete. If you change this to Concrete you will not be able to do it. Bit annoying really!

as Poleary  well remarked , if the Material for Model Behaviour is set to Concrete the Cut does not occur. This does not mean that the material is changed if you chose another option, but it will act differently. So change in Material for Model Behaviour from Concrete to Other and reload the Structural Column Family back into the Project. Now it will be cut....If you verify in Project , the material of the column is not changed. You can control everything from a schedule.

Hi Constantin,

Thanks for the explanation. One question though: what is affected whe the Material for Model Behavior is set to Other? Does it affect the structural analytical model?

Thanks in advance. I am quite new to revit structure.

being an architect and not a structural engineer, I don't know how does it affect structural analytical mode.

But you can do it other way so to preserve the Concrete  behavior. You can make this into Family Editor by using Cut with a Void -Extrusion (maybe parametric). Once loaded into the Project, even if Revit show the message that the column can not be Cut, it will be.Revit_6oDtvW6N84.png
