Revit File cannot be opened - error message

I am trying to open a revit file that was sent to me. An error message appears 52% into opening:

"The file cannot be opened. There are too many elements missing in it. Please contact Autodesk Support"

I have search all over the site, there is no way to acutally contact Autodesk Support, the links are cyclical and provide not email or phone number for support. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue are greatly appreciated. Thansk!

If you or your company has a subscription with Autodesk, you can open a support case under "Account Management> Support." When opening the project in Revit, have you tried checking the "Audit" check box?

I tried the audit option, and it still generates the same error message. Any other suggestions?

Hi @Jill_Klores,

Sorry to hear about the file issue, take a look at the solutions provided in this data corruption article. If you saved to a network location, a backup file will be saved in your journals folder, make sure you copy that file somewhere else before trying to open.

If a backup cannot be opened:

Create a new Central file from an existing Local file, following the steps outlined in the document below:

See:  Creating a Central Model from an Existing Workshared File

If all of the local files are corrupt and all of the automatic backups are corrupt, recover a manual backup.

The automatic backups will store a set number of backups, and if more saves are made during a single editing session than this number, all of the automatic backups made previous to the editing session will be replaced. If a problem occurs during the editing session and all of the backups are replaced then you will not have an automatic backup available prior to the problem. Making periodic manual backups will allow you to ensure that you have a good copy of the model saved.

I am getting this error when I audit the file, but it opens OK without audit checked. Back up files are the same unfortunately.

I have tried creating new centrals etc., but nothing seems to clear these errors on audit.

I am concerned this may develop into a terminal error for the project file, so apart from keeping an extended series of back up files, how can this problem be fixed??

Are you on subscription?  If so, the best course would be to open a support request through your (or, if someone else manages your Autodesk subscription, your manager's) Autodesk Account page.  The support staff will likely set up an FTP site for transferring your model file.  The process will most likely take a few days, during which you will not be able to work on that model.

I am currently having the same problem as dennis.

I am working with a workshared file, and I can open it and synchronize/purge with no problem at all, but whenever I try to audit the file, Revit tells me that the file is corrupted and needs to be manually recovered. I tried purging, saving a new central, discarding the worksets, and nothing has worked.

Unfortunately, sending the file to Autodesk tech support is not a viable option since the model legally belongs to my client, and I cannot send the model to a third party under any circumstances.

Any suggestions/feedback are welcomed. Thanks.

I found a solution when converting from 2015 to 2016. Maybe the following could help:

  • Purge
  • Remove imported .dwg symbols (I believe this alone fixed it for me)
  • Remove any links
  • Try disabling worksharing and delete worksets prior

Good luck!

Hi,

Thank you for taking your time to write this in the forum,

There are various reasons for file corruption, it's a general thing with all kinds of files. However, there are some areas that are more common than others, such as:

  • Read/write failure to the storage media.
  • Program crashes (especially when writing data to the RVT model).
  • An add-in that modifies elements in ways not possible or desired through the normal UI.
  • Untested operations or series of operations (e.g. cancelling a synchronize, or using the Undo command after synchronizing).

Throughout the lifespan of Revit 2015 we have 14 updates where each one of them contributes to a functioning product. So if you haven't already, I would check that every single user is running the latest version and this applies to all our products - the Autodesk Desktop App will notify you every time there's a new update - it will be the same for whatever release you may be using.

Note: Updating will not correct already corrupt files.

As to you specific file, if you want I would be more than happy to go through the file and correct whatever might cause conflict.

I will just need you to confirm and I'll send you a link to a folder where you can upload your file.

In any case let me know how you would like to proceed,

Thanks again, have a great week,
