Revit FBX export into 3dsMax with UVW?

Hi!

So, I finally finish my building model, now i'm exporting it to 3ds max with FBX file. But this is a huge project and for the textures i need it's necessary to implement UVW map in 3d Max. If I import the FBX with material grouping settings and i apply the UVW it won't work correctly. So i have to Edit mesh and assign UVW map to each object... one.. by one... by one... until i almost end up killing myself.... (just kidding.. but it's boring...). The other way is to import into 3dsmax as every object independent.. but it's the same history only that i don't have to use mesh to apply the the UVW but it's the same one by one by....etc.

I know that in 3d max i can copy UVW properties and paste it into the similar object but not all of them have the same measurements, so with the copy/paste property i save some time but still have a lot of objects to apply UVW....

Does anyone in this amazing, wonderful, gorgeous community!!! now how to do this process faster????

Hi @Anonymous

Its been a while since you made this post, so I wanted to follow on this issue.

Revit FBX files use Feet as the default unit setup- if 3ds Max’s system units are set to other System Unit Scale this can add additional processing overhead. When the data is translated on import from the Revit FBX file there is additional process in converting the unit scale of the source objects during the import process (from Feet to other) If 3ds Max’s system units are not set to Feet, import times can be significantly increased.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below prior to import of Revit FBX:-

  • In 3ds Max, go to- Customize>Units Setup
  • From the ‘Units Setup’ window, select ‘System Unit Setup’ to open the System Unit Setup dialog
  • From the ‘System Unit Setup’ dialog, set the following and then hit OK:-

System Unit Scale-
1 Unit = Feet

Let us know if you were able to resolve your issue and if you have additional questions! Glad to help.

I suggest you post to the FBX forum for specific questions.

Hi @Anonymous

I saw that you had posted a similar issue in the 3dsMax forum. Link HERE to help others seeking similar solutions.

Object exports from 3D softwares have different UV scale during transformation. FBX export has the disadvantages of  the UV coordinates not being able to handle unit conversion properly - i.e, the UVW mapps are 12 times too large when imported from Revit. You can divide your map scale by 12 when converting base units from Revit (1 unit = 1 foot) to Max (1 unit = 1 inch) Can you try this for me?

Here is a link to a video on Revit to Max UVW Unwrap

If you can share a screenshot of the scene we can take a peek and it and the community may provide you with more responses.

There's a plug-in for 3ds Max called SteamRoller that will automatically apply a flatten map to everything in your scene. It doesn't work for 100% of objects, and it's not exactly what you're looking for, but it will cut your time unwrapping UVWs down considerably.

After everything is unwrapped use a MapScaler modifier on all the objects you have to have the same size texture or texel density.

Hi @Anonymous

Did the plugin that @JJWGallagher provide help clarify the UVW mapping issue you were looking for? Were you able to try the 'steamroller' plugin?

Looking forward to hearing back from you with a screenshot of your project image if possible.

Regards,
