Oh no!  This may be fixed by auditing the file.  Save all your work, and then close out of your file.  As you start to open the file again, check the box next to the word "Audit" on the bottom of the open file screen.  Let's start there and see if it sorts itself out!

Is this a workshared file? Make sure to hang on to your latest backup and clear your locals before you audit it. Put it in a separate folder or something.

If auditing does not work, that means that the central model will need to be replaced. You will need to delete the central model and replace it with the latest backup that you have preserved. Once this is done, open the new model, relink all files, make sure that everything works.

If not a workshared file and auditing does not work, then rename the latest backup that you have preserved. You may lose some work.

Reinstate your latest backup. Move it to a different location. Clean out all your locals and temp files. Recycle Bin. Make sure that the backup opens successfully. Delete the central model. Save the backup as a central model. Live happily ever after.

Hi Vera,

First thing first before going all crazy!

Is the corrupted file the project or a link into the project?

Very important as it localises the issue.

If it is a file linked into your project, going back to the latest backup will not help.

You will need to get the backup of the linked file!

And getting the backup of your main file would be pointless!

Hope this helps,

François

Thank you,

the error is in our file, not the linked file.

I managed to make it work by recreating the central file.

then I tried to run an audit to find out what was causing the problem but could not get that to work.

the next thing I will try is to purge the file.

it would be good to know if there was a way to localise a problem causing file corruption though.

regards

Vera

Hi @Anonymous,

Well done for re-creatin gth efile from a local one.

About the source of the problem, here is the thinking:

  1. either the sources lies within your project, an dthen all you need to do is to clean it, with sadly no garantee that you will eliminate the source of the problem. But here are a few steps:
    1. check your existing families, make sure that they don't include imports, etc that could make toyr file unstables
    2. Purge your rooms, spaces, etc  (you will have to do that via schedules, filtering by area<0.01, which will allow you to disply all redundant or not placed rooms, spaces, etc)
    3. Purge your file several times (as it will not purge everything on the first go)
    4. Check your file for errors, they can create proper bugs (Manage >Information>Waarnings or something like that, sorry I have started the French version this morning, see picture...) Then try fixing the most important ones... (fixing all takes ages, even if you are supposed to check them regularly...)

  2. OR (and most likely) the corruption happened during file writing. A disconnexion from the network during the process of sync could be enough, There are programatic securities there, but it still happens from time to time. In this case, nothing to do, but it means your file itself is not responsible for the bug!

Hope this helps,

François
