Revit Crashes every time I pivot a 3D view

In both Revit 2025 and 2026, no matter the updatets, every time I pivot a 3D view with the "Shift" button, the program crashes.

In every project file.

I need to pivot  several 3D views to line them up with photographs, and then render them to insert the rendering in the original photo. I need this feature to work.

I've added both a screenshoot and a file in wich this issue happens. It's a test file I created to confirm the problem happens no matter what.

It's the message about the view, not Revit crashing itself. Or does Revit also crash after this?

This happens somethimes when the view is heavy + other loads on system.

Normally the view afterwards is ok, but can be the view is to "heavy" for the system, due to amount of info, position from origin etc.

Try reducing it's content?

- any linked dwg on in it, turn them off specially if they have large coorinates (or far from revit origin)

- turn some elements off

- turn rendering/shading/shadow/lighting off

- above can be done by using a secondary viewtemplate and set the original back after correct viewpoint.

- Hardware acceleration (switch it and see if it helps)

make sure both Revit and the GPU are using latest drivers

Other than that, in Revit, go to File menu then to Options and navigate to the Graphics section. Try disabling hardware acceleration and disable anti-aliasing. Anti-Aliasing smooths the edges of geometry to reduce jagged lines. It can consume quite a bit on graphics resources. Options usually include Off, Enabled, or Application Controlled. See which is best suitable.

Understanding the other options could also help you troubleshoot:

  1. Smooth Lines with Anti-Aliasing is a toggle that improves visual smoothness of lines in the view.
  2. Use Optimized View Navigation helps improve performance when navigating complex views by temporarily lowering visual quality during navigation.
  3. Use Legacy Draw Options (in some versions) allows compatibility or fallback to older drawing methods, useful in some troubleshooting scenarios.

The program crashes after I close that view, either immediately or after a few clicks when I try to do something else.

The problem presents itself even in a new files, with just a few walls created (see attached file).

I have alredy tried switchin off Hardware acceleration.

In the next reply I'll report all the things I've alredy tried.

I'm using the lastest version of Revit with the latest update provided. I'm also using the latest video drivers provided by the manufacturer.

I've actually tried with both the dedicated and integrated GPU, both with the latest drivers, to no avail.

I've also tried disabling hardware acceleration, no avail.

I've also tried disabling anti aliasing.

Optimized view should alredy be enabled.

I don't know how much of this is caused by performances issue, if I don't press "shift" I can orbit the view no issues. I can zoom in, zoom out, walk around, even change FOV. It shows that error and then crashes only when I use the "shift" button to rotate the view to an angle. I need to do exaclty that to line up the view to the pictures I need to insert the renders into.

I was running Revit 2025, then updated it to the latest patch fix, to no avail. At that point I upgraded to Revit 2026 (wasting a full afternoon of work) to still find that issue.

These are all the steps I alredy tried, sorry if I forgot to mention all of them in the main post. But the issue happens even in newly created projects, with just a few walls created (like the attached file).

Could be a Addin, try disabling them?

To be sure, it happens every time when you try to Pivot no matter the 3D view content or project?

Any change you have a special mouse, I've seen some posts (and fixes in updates) about some special mouse(s) that crash Revit while using orbit...

I have no addin installed.

This 2026 version of revit is a clean install I did yesterday, I didn't even install any content pack yet.

And yes, it happens every time I use "shift" + mouse to rotate the 3D view. I have disabled the "keep view vertical" to rotate it, and it toggles me to press "shift" to rotate.

Big projects, new drawings, it doesn't matter. The view reports an error, and then the software crashes when I try to reload it or change it.

I do have a vertical USB mouse, this one: Trust BAYO II USB

But, apart for it's shape, it's a classic USB mouse. Could it really be the reason? Currently I just decide to install my revit on another computer I borrowed for this project, I can't postpone it another day to troubleshoot, but while it renders I'll still try to replace the mouse and see if it changes anything.

I'm sorry, I can't open the 2026 version to check the file you attached. Could you please upload the 2025 version instead? Also, if you could upload the journal file that was recorded right after the crash or error, I can take a closer look at it. What TripleM mentioned in their last reply is also a possible cause. If your mouse has any macros assigned, that might be triggering the issue. Try using a basic mouse to eliminate that as a potential cause.

Judging from the screenshot, it appears you are using the Orbit function via the Object Wheel. In that case, what is the purpose of using the Shift key? It shouldn't be necessary; Shift is typically used to orbit the model without the Object Wheel's Orbit function.

That said, have you tried orbiting without using the Object Wheel and it still crashed?

Try the following:

  • Select a single element (not the entire point cloud)

  • Use Shift + middle mouse button to orbit

Sorry, I don't have the 2025 installed anymore. And I cannot waste another afternoon to install it.

Shift + Middle mouse doens't do what I need.

I need to rotate the view without changin it's position. I need to change the angle from the pavement of the camera.

As far as I know, using the Wheel, clicking "Orbit" and pressing "shift" is the only way to do that.

But fear not.

It crashes EVEN ON THE OTHER COMPUTER. A much better machine with a better graphic card and a better processor than mine. And with a normal, basic, wireless mouse.

This screenshoot represent what I want to achieve with the 3D view. I want to rotate it like these arrows point. I don't know if there is a way to do it without the wheel, searching Revit documentation doesn't help. I only found I may do it with the wheel. If it worked, of course.
