Revit Cannot Open Older Version File

Hi, I'm thing this is the correct place to post this. Please correct me (again) if not!

I'm attempting to upgrade an older Revit file to my current version of Revit 2018 (trial version).

When I open the file I get the upgrade prompt, followed by the progress bar that reaches 100%. Upon completion however, I get nothing.

I'm wondering if this is a file size issue. The file has been sent to me 3rd party. I've asked him to send over another smaller file, and I've had no problems opening and upgrading that. 

The size of the file to be opened is 114MB. My PC spec is Intel i5 processor @3.30GHz, 8GB ram, NVIDIA Quatro K620 2GB video card. Windows 10 OS.

Can anyone suggest any potential solutions?

Which version is the file?

Hi Rina,

The file is a 2014 version. I know this because I've been able to open it using the online Autodesk viewer and check the file properties.

Do you think there is a potential limitation due to me using the Revit Trail version?

OK - upgrading from 2014 to 2018 is quite a shock for Revit. We don't want to hurt its delicate little feelings, do we?

Do you have access to older versions for Revit? A solution is to update the project by stages - 2014 to 2015, 2015 to 2016, etc.

I understand what you're saying. However, are you aware of any way that I can obtain an earlier version of the program?

Alternatively is it possible to change a setting within the 2018 version that prevents upgrade to the latest version (I doubt it)? 

I've literally been using Revit for 3 weeks and hence am completely unaware.

Ouch. I feel your pain. Updating files can be a bagatelle, and sometimes Revit just won't do it.

Another tip - open the file as Detached, with Audit checked. Then save it with a different name.

Can you share the file?

Welcome to the Autodesk community! 

I'm sorry to hear that you are facing issues with the Revit versions.

Do you have any special families in the project? In some instances, if these families were removed the upgrade worked fine, but we'll have to test your file to confirm if its the same issue.

I will require your Revit file and most recent journal. I can share a private folder to test further.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to share the file as it is confidential. 

What do you mean exactly by special families? As previously mentioned I do lack previous Revit experience. Am I right in thinking there should be no external references that would need to be carried across with a Revit project file? IE. a 3rd party Architect sends me a .rvt file. I shouldn't need the individual .rfa files too. This is the case I am working with, hence unfortunately I don't know the contents of the file other than what I can see in the Autodesk viewer. 

As mentioned, would it be possible to upgrade the file in instances of Revit version release year? Do you think this is where the problem lies?
