Revit Border Family with Key Plan

I have a border family with a key plan added to it. Each of the Key "Areas" has an instance parameter associated to it. I needed to relocate one of the "areas" and change some of the instance parameter names for the areas. When I load this back into my project it removes all the previously checked instance parameter values on all sheets.
The same thing happens whether I overwrite parameter values or not when reloading the family.
Is there better way to set up my key plan to avoid this or a different way I should be loading the border into the model?
