Im confused on what 3Ds max is. Can i build a whole home in Revit with no finishes on it and just import it into 3ds and add finishes and rendering? In 3Ds how versatile are the material selections?

don't know what your confused about

there is 3ds max or there is Revit

they are completely separate products

yes you can design your house in Revit and import into 3ds max to render or you can just render inside Revit

Basically 3Ds Max is for rendering and presentation only. You can bring in a design from Revit and you will have much more control over what you can do as far as rendering and presentation.

Revit does offer rendering tools and you can do a respectable job with just those tools, but 3Ds Max gives you a lot more control over the final result.

Think about it like riding a single speed bike vs. a 21 speed bike on a hilly road. Both bikes will get you from one end to the other, but the 21 speed bike offers more control over how tired you are when you get to the end.
