REVIT 2019 - Decals not visible in FBX

there are older posts saying that it is neccesary  to have a newer viewer than the REVIT Version to be able to see the dacals. Is this still the case?

What kind of viewer would i need to see decals in an fbx file exported from REVIT 2019.

In the Windows 10 Mixed Reality Viewer the model looks ok, but decals dont show.

Hi @Anonymous

Can you share a screencast of what you are seeing?

Are you using an FBX exporter?  Did you try rendering in Revit prior to FBX export? Did the decals show correctly in native Revit rendering?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

sorry, too late for a screencast.

Here are screenshots of how it looks in REVIT and how it looks in the fbx.

I am exporting directly from REVIT with the built in export function (export fbx).

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for sharing the screenshots.

Can you confirm if you are on the latest build for Revit 2019 and 3dsmax (version?)

Also, do you see this issue specific to a model/user/ machine or occurs with all models?

Are the images located in a network server or local location?

We would need a file to test and a recent journal to proceed. let me know and I can share a private upload folder.

Hi, and sorry for the bad quality of the fbx screenshot. I have no idea yet, why Windows mixed reality viewer shows the fbx in this kind of shading. In REVIT it looks ok as you could see.

See screenshot below pls for the Version i am using.

I already made a simple model to see if that was modelspecific. It is not.

Unfortunately i have REVIT only running on my Laptop (one user).

Images are local and network (same effect).

I would appreciate to provide you a file for further tests.

Another open point i have is that i would like to see the text of the room descriptions an the measurements, which i can see in REVIT 3D, also in the fbx file. Perhaps there is a way without a workaround with underlayed decay.

And you are asking for 3DSmax Version. I did not involve 3DSMax yet in this project.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for responding!

I came across an older thread that has a discussion related to decals and that Revit does not support export of decals.

I'll have to test and confirm this on our end.

Meanwhile, can you try exporting to an ACIS solid and see if the decals appear?

Also, can you share the file to test?

Hi @Anonymous

Glad to know you were able to figure this out.Smiley Happy

I'm posting your workaround below to benefit the community!

Hi Viveka, I found a workaround using 3dsmax. When I export the fbx from there, I get an intermediate export menu where I can check mark something like external media. Then it works! Michael

Also, see the below AKN articles for reference:

Embed Media (Activate this option to include (or embed) all media associated with your scene in the FBX file itself. For example, texture images).

Export Presets (Choose your preset by selecting it in the menu of the FBX Plug-in “Presets” section).

Hope that helps!
