How to troubleshoot lockups, syncing errors and general file inaccessibilities

We're a medium-sized AE firm using Revit 2016 with Revit Server connecting our two offices and multiple at-home users who use a VPN to access their office desktop.  Probably once a month we experience issues where a file can't be opened by a second user or they can't sync etc.

It does appear more often when a user is working from home but before I assume anything, what is the best way to troubleshoot this?  I never experienced this at my previous job which was just a single office with no Revit Server or VPN.  We have an IT consultant I plan on contacting but I'd like to be able to tell them more details on what to look into.

You could have a look in the journal files and see if something is mentioned there.

also the window logs might give some indication.

Further make sure that everybody is working with the same Revit version and that they create a local on regular basis (daily/weekly).

They could look at if the connection from home to office is fast an stable

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
