Revit 2016 - 'There is a circular chain of references among the highlighted...'

Project created in Revit 2015 opens without problems in Revit 2015. If I want to open the samen file in Revit 2016, Revit first displays it's upgrading the project. And then There is a circular chain of references among the highlighted elements. and the only option I have is 'Cancel'. So I click Cancel:

Data in file <revit project> is corrupt and needs to be manually recovered. I.e. there's no way to open the file in 2016. Checking the Audit option has no effect. How do I open this file in 2016?

You need to do some troubleshooting.

Step 1:

Check the journals if there is something in there that gives a clue what is causing the error.

If the journals does not give the anaswer then you will need to find out where the problem is.

Step 2

See if you can load the project in Revit 2016 on another computer

If it fails, than it is something in the project that does not get converted well.

Step 3

Then I would open the project in 2015 delete everything in the model, save it and open it in Revit 2016.

If it fails to open than start deleting things from the family browser, save it and check if you can open it in Revit 2016.

See if there is a point when you can load it in Revit 2016. Then start adding things again. If you are lucky then within a few tries you will find the culprit.

Solved the problem by opening the file in 2016, noted the object id of the erroneous elements, then opened the file in 2015 and deleted those elements. Weren't important elements. Saved the file and opened it in 2016 without problems.

Had the same error when upgrading from 2015 to 2016.  Just expand the error message and checkmark the empty check boxes next to the offending items (you may need to expand the list by clicking on the boxed + signs).  These items are then skipped over (deleted) for the upgrade.
