Relocate the project!

Hello,

 I am very confused with the coordinates in Revit. And now I have started to explore this more.

 

I have my building in an elevation 0.0 but I did my toposurface in the correct elevation. So now I need to move my building only in the coorect elevation. I tried the relocation project option, now my building have the elevation that I want but the toposurface is still higher than my building.

 

Could you please someone help me?

Could you share your dwg?

You can use everything: polylines, 3Dpolilines and points. With 3Dpolilines you will get a warning message saying that there are not Contour Lines, that is all.

I have checked the .dwg. The terrain and the building are at differents elevations (you see it if you look at it in 3d or from the front). There is nothing you can do to have it in another way in revit if you import this file.

You could:

-Divide your drawing in two files, which part in 0.0 is and which in real elevation.
-Import your file as it is, create the terrain in revit and then move just the revit terrain.
-Import it in real 0.0 and change the view settings so that you still can see it in proyect 0.0 -> The terrain is in its proper elevation and you can still see and model over the building drawing.

AutoCAD

I left in the dwg file only the terrain in the elevation that it had (real elevation).

 

Revit - Situation 1 

Now in Revit I have my building in the elevation 0.0.

When I link the CAD the terrain is much higher than the buiding.

I want to avoid to move in Revit the terrain down as I will lose the reference point with the real elevation in terrain.

 

Revit - Situation 2 

In Revit I have my building in elevation 615m (real elevation). 

When I link the CAD the terrain is again much higher than the buiding.

 

Revit - Situation 3

In Revit I have my building in elevation 0.0.

When I link the CAD the terrain is again much higher than the buiding.

I change the elevation in project base boint in order to have the real elevation.

The building moved higher as the terrain. So the distance remains the same.


- Is there any way as it is the dwg file to have in revit the building and the terrain in the real elevation without need to move the terrain down?

- The dwg. file with the terrain in which elevation should be? In the real one or in 0.0?

This is what I have been doing (with probably too many steps), but it works with multiple buildings on one site.

 

Short version: "Create a Site.rvt file that keeps the dwg with real coordinates and publish them to the Building file"

 

Long version:

 

1. Create a blank Revit file named Site.rvt

2. In Site.rvt, create a level (TOPO LEVEL) at the elevation you want for your Building (your case - 615m)

3. Link the dwg file in Level 1 (0.00m). You should be able to see it now in the TOPO LEVEL Floor plan.

4. Go to Manage - Coordinates - Acquire Coordinates and click on the dwg.

5. Save the Site.rvt file.

6. Create your Building.rvt file and draw 2 grids or intersecting walls. These will allow you to position the Building on the exact coordinates in the Site.rvt file

7. Close the Building file and link it (Origin to Origin) in the Site.rvt file. It will be on Level 1 in the Site file.

8. Go to an Elevation View and move the Building link up to the TOPO Level

9. Go to TOPO LEVEL view and move and rotate the Building file to its actual coordinates (you can use snaps in the dwg)

10. Go to Manage - Coordinates - Publish Coordinates and select the Building link. It will ask in which position would you like to save the new coordinates.

11. Save the Site.rvt file. Revit will say that the location position changed. Pick Save the new position back to the link.

12. Close the Site file and open the Building file. The coordinates should be the ones from the Site file.

13. To check, link the Site file in the Building file using the Shared Coordinates option.

Hello I did the workflow that you described,

 

12. Close the Site file and open the Building file. The coordinates should be the ones from the Site file.

 

Now the building is in the elevation 615m.

 

But again when I link the .dwg file - By shared coordinates (which has the same elevation) it appears higher than the building, and I cannot understand why..

 

I tried instead of dwg. to do the last step  13. To check, link the Site file in the Building file using the Shared Coordinates option...but the link Revit is visible only when I turn on the Reveal hidden elements but it is not really hide in view... It seems that the elevation of the Revit Link Site file it is correct as it meets the building...

You are almost there, I think.

Go to the 3D view in your Building file, go to VG - Revit Links and set the display settings to By linked View (choose the 3D view from the SiteFile).

 

You should get the dwg (which is actually in the SiteFile) in your view this way.

It also works on floor plans in the same manner.

I attached 2 screenshots with a quick mock-up.

This usually means you do not have that type of view (3D, FloorPlan, CeilingPlan etc.) in your linked file.

Open the Site file and create a 3D view (where you should see the dwg) and save it.

Then open the Building file and the By linked view should not be grayed out anymore.

Well ok, I did it!

 

So with this workflow I need to create the terrain in Revit in the SITE.rvt and it will be always link in the Building.rvt, right?

 

I would like to have the terrain real in my model. This is why I am trying to import the dwg in the correct elevation but when I import the CAD file (origin to origin or By shared coordinates) in Building.rvt it is higher in the double distance..

Great!

 

The CAD file needs a level on import (you have the option Place on level on the right side), so that is why the CAD file is 615 meters higher than your building (your Level 1 is at 0.00 - Project Basepoint).

 

If you want it in your Building File, then create a level at -615m and insert it there.

 

P.S.: As a recommendation, after creating the Toposurface, remove the dwg from your Building Model.

I noticed that the value in the points that I have in the terrain don't have the correct hight ( 615 , 613 etc ) the value now is (0.7 , 0.2 etc).. Do you know if can I have the correct value? Is it possible to create the terrain corresponding to the survey point? 

 

I prefer to have the .dwg in order to create the terrain because after I can create a graded region, and I find it easier if I have it 'live' in my project.

 

Why you prefer this workflow with the link file? Just to know!

On one side, I use it to be safe 🙂

DWGs in Revit files are known to cause issues and I prefer to troubleshoot a Site file than a working Building model with users on it.

 

On the other side is having one file that dictates the coordinates to all other files (maybe you split your model by levels in a big building, or having the facade and interiors in different models, or have multiple discipline models and so on). This way when they link together there will not be positioning errors and they will fit well in Navisworks for clash detection and further checking.

 

 

The coordinates are correct, they just report to the Project Basepoint (which is at 615m on Z). You can use a spot elevation that references the Survey Point and you can get the absolute coordinates.

So each time that you have a change in the your building ,  you go in the SITE.rvt , reload the Building.rvt in order to see the changes and you update the grated topography?

 

And for the building pad? You are in the SITE.rvt and you create these having as reference your link building?

Yes, you have to go to site.rvt every time that you have to change something like a pad, that is why I said I wouldn´t recomend it for small proyects.

Now the contour lines in AutoCAD have the real elevation 615m , 617 m  etc.

So when I import this .dwg in Revit it has as referent the Project Base point.

- If I have my building (Project Base point) in 0.0 the link .dwg will go higher in an elevation 615m.

- If I have my building (Project Base point) already in an elevation 615m the link .dwg will go in an elevation 1230m.

 

Is there any way the link .dwg to take as a reference the survey point which is remain 0.0?

With this I will have the building (Project Base point) in 615m and also the terrain.

 

Maybe it is completely wrong this question but I am just wondering.

I may not explain it properly, but that is what a meant with:

"When you import a CAD, it is always in related to a Level. You can select it and in the properties adapt the elevation or you can create a new level in Elev=0.0, an assign the CAD files to this level."

When you import a new dwg file you can see right "Place at", under "Positioning" 

 

I understand that when you import a CAD you expect it to relate to (0,0,0) Project or Survey. But it is actually (0,0,Level) where Level is the high from the Level where you inserted it.

In order to have it to (0,0,0) related you need a Level which elevation is 0 and then insert the dwg file in this level.
