Reload child xref in Revit?

We have a project with a number of linked CAD files living in BIM360. The Manage Links window only lists the parent CAD file, and none of its child xrefs. How do I reload one of those child xrefs? Reloading the parent file does not appear to do anything, even if you do "reload from". I also closed and reopened the Revit file, no change. I don't recall this being an issue on previous projects. I checked the child CAD file in BIM360 Document Management and it appears correct (updated). Any help would be gratefully appreciated. TIA.

Are you sure the Category is turned on?

WAG:

Have you tried opening up the parent "CAD" file and saving?

Rob

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

There is no direct link between the xrefs in the CAD file and Revit. You have to open the CAD file, update the xrefs there, save the CAD file, and then reload in Revit.

Thanks for the input. But nothing has changed in the parent file. All the xref paths are exactly the same as before, when the file was originally loaded into Revit. And yes, of course the category is turned on in the view template, or the (obsolete) references wouldn't be visible at all. Any other ideas? When you say "open the CAD file, update the xrefs there" (even though there is nothing to update), do you mean using Autocad to open the file in BIM360? I have done that too, no change.

I found the problem. I had stripped the paths from the xrefs in the parent file, but you have to take the additional step of making the path type relative. We even had an entry in our "Best Revit Practices" file that said to make sure the paths are NOT relative 🙄 I'll change that. Again, thanks for the input.

You might want to check with others in your firm as to why they didn't want paths to be relative. I highly doubt that was an arbitrary decision.

I am reviving this thread because a similar issue is now recurring. We have made all the changes noted above, plus we have BURST all the blocks in the child xrefs because we were getting the "some values are out of range" error, which seemed to prevent the child xrefs from reloading. The error no longer appears, but at least one of the child xrefs are not reloading. I even deleted the offending layer from the child xref--no change. Can anyone help with this? It is very frustrating.

Is the child XREF attachment or overlay?

Never mind, for some reason Revit remembered the original child link location. I moved those files to a different location and now it updates properly. But why Revit does this I'll never understand.
