Raising a house

got a house that needs to be raised 5 ft and adding a lower level.

got a gut feeling that there will be an issue (between existing conditions and new construction) moving the levels up.

has anyone done something similar?

Yes.  But, there's not a one-size-fits all solution. A lot of factors determine how to approach.  Sounds like you're weighing them now. Can you share your specific concerns/challenges?

do you mean in revit or in real life?

in revit (i am learning) Im guessing as is just drawings will be easy

I guess as long as I don't print out the existing elevations/sections, etc. i should be OK.  once I raise the floors up the 5', wont be able to go back with messing up the new plans/elevations.

@arkitek2ss - try linking the project into a new one - you will then be able to manipulate the levels as you need to.....

So the issue for you in raising the house, is not how it will affect the MODEL, but instead, how it will affect the CROPPED VIEWS?  Fascinating -- but absolutely a valid consideration.  Yes; I see your point and agree.  You will need to go through and correct ALL your Views AND Sheets afterwards .

I agreed with @Sahay_R.  You can keep the existing model and existing views/sheets in one file, link it to another file, map phases properly, and create the new basement and new views/sheets there.

And in the Revit world, moving an existing house to a new location = demolishing the house and building the exact same one at the new location.

the thing is that renovations will happen on the upper levels as well.

@arkitek2ss - the renovations on the upper level can be carried out in the linked file. Or in the host file too - as long as you have Copy/Monitored the levels so that they are the same between models, you should be fine. The benefit of this approach is that there will be no accidental modifications to the existing model

Then I suggest not moving the house at all, add new levels and new level type and use them for new elevations.  To show the +5' to the new levels, you can use Survey Point to base the levels from, or use a formula to change the label.

Is the house already built? Are you going to raise it or to make a deeper level? 

Why don't you just add a lower level in your model?

Since I won't have any elevations/sections showing any demo, I'm just going to raise it up 5' and add the lower level.
