Problem with Place on Face Family

To whom it may concern,

As below I tried the Urinal family sticking the host wall so as to convert  into "Place On Face", but eventually cannot move it along the horizontal level after convertion completed. I am not sure if the cause comes from the family or the incorrect usage for the convertion of family in orientation. Thanks.

1. Create a new Revit project file.
2. Create a wall.
3. Load and place the wall-based family that needs to be converted.
4. Save this as a new project (e.g. Project A).
5. Open a separate Revit session and create a new project (e.g. Project B).
6. Link Project A into Project B.
7. Navigate to the Collaborate tab > Copy/ Monitor > Select Link.
8. Copy the wall-based family instance from the linked model (Project A) into the host model (Project B).

At this point in the thread I think the original question/problem has been resolved. You now have a urinal family that can be placed on a face, not just a wall. Using Copy/Monitor is part of the technique to convert a wall based family to a face based. I have no idea why you are using Copy/Monitor in the video you shared. It seems irrelevant now. You should be able to place the urinal family in any project file you need it in now.

 

You also ignored the warnings about the urinal position being different from the Monitored version. The point of having your copy of the fixture is to alert you if theirs changes, as well as allowing you to connect to the fixture with pipe etc. While it is possible to change yours so they'll change theirs it is better to let one side manage the element, so each team respects and understands who is responsible for design elements.

 

As @barthbradley explained, the issue of moving the urinal up is the View Range settings.

 

  • Imagine standing on the first floor of a building and then someone moves the urinal up to the second floor. You can no longer see the urinal in the first floor because it is beyond your ability to see it, the structure of the building prevents you from seeing it. In this case Revit is looking down (in plan views). Imagine you tilt your head so your face is parallel to the floor. Your eyes can only see from your face down to the floor, nothing above you is visible to you. If you stand on personnel lift and do the same but raise the lift slowly, the higher you go the more you can see beneath you. Where your eyes are is the cut plane.
  • The bottom plane adjusts how far down you'd like Revit to include elements in the view and draw them with projection lineweight (usually thinner).
  • The Top plane adjusts how far up Revit should include elements that also intersect the cut plane. Some categories behave differently in this area like casework or MEP elements (depending on view discipline).
  • View Depth adjusts how far you want to look below you. Imagine standing on a balcony overlooking the ground floor below. If that balcony is on the 4th floor Revit will only show you down to the 4th floor. But if you increase the depth to see all the way down to the ground floor then elements at lower levels will appear. Elements that exist between the bottom plane and View Depth are drawn with the <Beyond> linestyle.
  • Each plan oriented view (and RCP) have their own View Range settings. Plans usually cut at 1200mm and RCP usually cut just below the shortest door assembly so opening can be seen (door panel and swings turned off).

Dear barthbradley,

Thank you for your reminder. Basically, I always engage in 3D product design, the 3D thinking is always hovering in datum plates, for interception of points, lines and surfaces.  Thank you.

Dear Steve,

From "Copy/ Monitor" to "select link" is that I learnt from other veteran who gave me the video, I am not sure if it is the right path, especial for beginner. I had clicked "Pick New" Button, but found that the copy family is only capable to move with the host wall and cannot move all round directions. Regarding Copy/ Monitor function, you reminded that urinal family may be updated by Architecture changes the design. Would you help elaborate little more if you have spare time or convenience?  Thank you very much.
