Problem importing .dwg file into revit

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very specific issue with .dwg import option into revit 2017 and I was wondering if any of you will be familiar with it. I'm trying to import the latest .dwg plan drawing that me and my group made, however when I do so it loads an older version without iterations of that plan. I tried all the different import options and nothing changed. I also tried obtaining said file by downloading it through internet as well as through a USB, but that also didn't help. Finally I tried to import it into my autocad as well but it doesn't even show up at all. I would be grateful if you have a solution for this since I am not able to bring in any workload for our group project.

Hi @Anonymous

I try both linking and importing your CAd file and I get the following error message:

CAD GeometryCAD Geometry

Before you link the file into Revit, please do a custom clean up of the CAD file.

-Set the proper units

-Remove unnecessary elements

-Check/correct drawing also on the Z-axis.

Let me know if you have any questions.

@Anonymous - you have three drawings on your DWG. That could contribute to the problem that @Viveka_CD mentions

Open your DWG and do a SAVEAS three times - you will end up with three copies of the file in addition to the original. Rename them and erase unnecessary plans so that you have three files named First Floor, Second Floor, and Third Floor.

After that - run PURGE (select the option ALL) and OVERKILL. Zoom>>Extents to make sure that the extents of the DWG are only up to the edges of your plans.

Also - Linking a DWG is the preferred option. Avoid importing DWGs. If anyone tells you anything different from this, then you have my permission to point and laugh at them.

Good luck.

I did try linking it as well but I ended up with the same result. I will ask my group member to clean it up (as I am not so proficient with autocad myself) according to your instructions. My general concern however is the fact that our third group member downloaded that very same file into rhino and the latest version apparead with no problems. I have no idea why I keep getting the older version of it even with the same error popping up. Do you think this issue is occuring strictly due to the fact that I am using revit software? I will let you know what happens next on Firday. Thanks for the advise!

As far as the Rhino thing goes - AutoCAD seems to be missing SHX (shape) files and gave me an error message. I think that is what Rhino can see and Revit and AutoCAD cannot see. Here are the 3D file extensions that Revit can see -

Hi @Anonymous

It is important that you have a cleaned CAD dwg - It is definitely good practice and avoids issues in the long run. A few settings to take care and you are on your way to a balanced well-performing model: smileyhappy:

Please see similar discussion on cleaning CAD drawings before linking HERE and HERE (a simple step by step process to clean and link CAD dwg)

I encourage you to see Best practices to follow when linking  DWG files into Revit

I also want you to check if you have the latest updates installed for your Revit version? Check the Desktop App to see if there are any Revit updates available. For information on using the Desktop App see the following article: About the Autodesk Desktop App

Note: If you are not able to download updates through the Desktop App, the following article has information on downloading updates through the Autodesk Accounts page:Install Updates, Add-ons, and Enhancements

I look forward to hearing from you once you have cleaned up your file and how the process goes in general.

Regards,
