Does anyone have a good way to place the camera so it's looking directly up vs forward?

Place camera in section. After that you can move the whole camera in a floor plan.
Cameras do not snap, therefore it is always approximate.
Otherwise you could try to use Dynamo to create a script that places (and rotates) the camera.
Then you might get accurate results

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
Maybe in 3d view you could switch to bottom view and set this view as perspective view, if not with camera.

Cut a section and add camera. Place where you want the camera to be and then point up the ceiling
Result is you get funky angles
