Phasing Issue: Graphic Overrides Not Changing All Existing Phases

Hello,

I have set up 7 different phases that will be occurring over the course of my project. For each phase I have created a separate floor plan set to that phase with the phase filter set to show previous & new. The problem I am having is that some phases are still appearing without the graphic overrides when they should be treated as a previous phase. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am using structural elements could that be the cause of the issue?

I just realized that it is only structural elements in my model that seem to be having this issue.

If I am understanding correctly, you are trying to use phasing to essentially filter structure components in order to generate different plans?  If so, that’s not how phasing works. Capture 5 shows a list, when you set capture 3 to joist phase, and show previous+(something), all phases above the joist phase[4] (under capture 5) should be visible (Rim[3], posts[2], and existing[1]). This appears to be what is happening, and that’s exactly what should be happening. You can try playing around with the phase filters, and creating your own, but I’ve never had much luck with this.

To do what you want I would recommend changing the file to a central model and creating work sets for each component. Some people will be appalled with this suggestion, as it’s not ‘best practice Revit’. Typically, with work sets you create work sets for each discipline (IE: all structure, all architecture, all MEP) and not for each component within the disciplines (IE: One work set for each - joists, rim joists, columns, ect). This requires full Revit as work-sharing is disabled in Revit LT. Maybe someone else has another idea, best of luck!

The phasing seems to be working correctly. The rim is already there in your joist phase, so then it applies the existing override to these elements. However it might be helpful if you zip and upload your file. Not entirely sure from the three images what's what.

But maybe it would be easiest for you to use selection filter and save some different selections. And set the filter settings for your views...

I am trying to generate step by step framing instructions for our employees in the field. I add a set of framing elements in a phase and then move to the next phase. I have all of my phase filters set as Previous + New. In capture 2 the phases 1, 2 & 3 are shown. 3 is the new phase. They are working properly since the greyed objects are all from phase 1 & 2, while the new objects made in phase 3 are in color. Capture three shows the phases 1, 2, 3 & 4. 4 is the new phase in this view. The problem is that the elements from phase 3 are still being displayed in color when they should be overridden and greyed out. I think it has something to do with the fact that they are structural elements. Does that clarify the situation?

Have you considered creating some filters to simulate your 7 phases?  I do this with my electrical devices sometimes.

It does, and this should work. The strangest thing is that the phasing works as you intend in 3D but not in plan! Maybe just use a section box in a dublicated 3D view, lock the view camera and make the images that way? Put said images on a sheet with a plan that has any technical info you may need?

Well at least I'm not crazy. For now I'm going to use filled regions to get it to look like I want it to. It's just some extra work.

this looks like a similar post on the Structural forum (same pictures, different explanation).

do you have any overrides applied to any of the content? Revit has hierarchy a to the graphics, Phasing is pretty far down the list. I don't remember where I found this, but I have been referencing it for a while now.Graphics Hierarchy.JPG

There does seem something off about your file, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. When I copied the geometry to a new project it did seemed to resolve the phasing graphic display.

For sure I'd remove all the phase material overrides in your phasing properties, you don't need those. (Re)set the phasing overrides as you want the cut/surfaces to display (existing override / new as category or override?) and probably use hidden line view style? Maybe elaborate how you would like it to display... Will have another look later.

Check your view range.  The rims were below the bottom so phase override had no effect.  Fixed below.

Could be. I actually also adjusted the vr, but still thought there was something off with these material overrides or something. Don't know what it was.

@ToanDNYep, you're right. I'm just not so much used to materials without patterns or maybe shaded plan views I guess. Just set bottom range to level below ie. and then you do need the phase-exist material for previous-new phase (or your filter 1), depending on how you want it to show graphically.
