Permanently changing Revit username in an organisation workshared environment

I understand that the standard Revit username is generated at the start of every Revit session by the default Windows username of the organisation account.

Is it possible to permanently change the Revit username in a organisation computer without it defaulting back to the Windows account name?

I am not discussing changing the username through Options, but a more permanent fix that ideally would not involve obtaining IT administrator rights.

Not sure I understand the question.  Type any name want. It'll stay that way until you change it or sign in.  No?

Like @barthbradley wrote, the default value is based on the logged in user but if you type something else in then that is maintained until you change it again. If you have to log into BIM 360 then your username must match your account ID. If your user name must change for any reason make sure you do that before you begin working on any project files. You can't change your user name once you're working in a local file. You have to keep the current user name until you synchronize and close the project.

This thread is now quite old but I'd still like to know if there is a more unified way to control this behaviour as the account admin.

We have about 40 architects on the team and the auto-generated usernames are starting to become quite confusing. I.E. "hey db67YXT5 can you relinquish elements please" is not a viable option because most users don't even know what their username is.

So, is there an option to set the username to anything else upon account creation, e.g. "first 8 characters of email adress" or something?

I know there are some pretty big organisations with a couple thousand Revit users and I can't imagine their admin sends emails to everyone urging them to change their username to something legible...

Indeed an old topic. Things have changed since 2018. I don't know what kind of licenses you use? User based licenses are the default for about 5 years now.

We are using user based licenses. We also have SSO enabled for our Team.

I know how to manually change the username for your own account, but there has to be a way to manage them for lots of accounts as an account administrator.

I agree. It's on the wish-list, if I'm correct. Allow Administrators to manage all user settings - Autodesk Community

When I create a new user, I intercept the welcome mail, log in with Autodesk as that new user, and set things like name correctly.

The issue raised in this discussion is no longer relevant with the unique User Login. In the past, when using server-based and floating licenses, random usernames were an issue for some, depending on how their IT infrastructure was set up namely when using floating windows IDs vs logins from different sites or IPs.

The issue you're facing is an entirely different topic — more philosophical in nature — and is managed differently by various organizations, firms, and clients. Moreover, Autodesk's strategy leans more toward implementing stricter security and privacy policies, so granting account admins full control over user credentials is unlikely to happen.

Thank you for responding.

Your answer suggests that there is indeed a way to manage this after all, or was that speculative?

Certainly giving the account admin full control over user credentials would be in no way secure and I don't think this would be a good solution. I'm just curious if there is a way to manage usernames at all.

I guess I'll raise this to customer service and see what they can do.

Of course there are ways not just one. But maybe we can discuss this in a separate discussion as I have already reported this discussion to an to an admin so that they move to archive since the issue has became obsolete.
