Opening Worksets dialog - why do some default to Open and others Closed

When Opening a local copy of a central model, the 'Opening Worksets' dialog appears, at which time you can set each workset to Opened = (Yes or No).  But sometimes they are set to Yes, sometimes they are set to No, sometimes there is a blend of some worksets yes, some worksets no. What controls this behavior? Is it possible to have the always default to 'all Yes'?

Thanks

Dustin

Unfortunately no, that link did not contain any information about why some of the worksets show as Open=Yes and others show as Open=No, be default, when opening a local copy of the project.

I looked at the link and I think it is relevant to your question. Which option did you choose when you open a file?  The options are pretty much self explained.

So far I haven't ran into a similar situation but I think it has to do with the default set in File Save options...When you create the central file for the first time (or create a new central by using Make this a Central Model after save),

Check this link Workflow for Setting up a Workshared Project

Alternatively; the BIM manager can specify the view to use whenever any local model is opened, or when a team member uses the Open dialog to detach from the central or to create a local model.  This would be in the Manage Tab and the Manage Project panel. (Set it to Last Viewed by default should solve the problem)

Thank you all for your suggestions. I guess my question was not clear enough. Attached is the dialog box I'm talking about. When the Central model is saved with the 'Specify' option, each time you open a local copy of the central, it prompts you to select which Worksets to either Make Editable and also which worksets to Open.  This dialog box appears after you are asked to 'Overwrite' the previous local or 'Append Timestamp' to it...

So you set your central model to always ask which worksets will be open
each time you open the file. However, Revit needs to start from some point,
and probably it's suggesting that you select to open the last worksets open
in a previous session.

It is only an educated guess and I'll let our fellow forum members to
comment.

I believe it shows the settings of the last time the central model was synced. Maybe by you, maybe by anyone else.

@dtiemeyer I believe the default was set to all NO in order to let team members specify what to load on the local model...Like that it is faster when loading local model instead of having undesired or unrequired views set by default to all Editable all Open...

Thanks RDAOU, But if you'll notice on that image, one of them was Yes, and all the others are No. Sometimes it might be 50/50 Yes vs No, other times 70/30. That's exactly what I'm asking. Is this arbitrary? Or is there some logic coded into Revit, and if so, what is that logic?

Thank you all for your thoughts. The one that seems most likely to be right is "that is the way it was last saved by a different user other than myself and I'm unaware of their settings".

Perhaps Autodesk will comment on this behavior?

What I am trying to tell you is that it is not arbitrary; as a matter of fact nothing in  Revit (or BIM in general) is arbitrary.

The above is managable/customizable by the BIM Manager who can control the Start View for all team members. Workset1 is the user created workset. It contains all existing model elements in the project. When you create worksets, you can reassign elements from Workset1 into the appropriate workset. You can rename this workset, but you cannot delete it.

The Link which @rodrigo.bezerra as well as the one I posted earlier has sublinks which can help understand the process.

  1. What @ToanDN meant to explain (I think) is that when you open your project (local model) and picking "Last Viewed" from the drop down menu of the Open dialog, Revit gives you the option to bypass that default screen from which you select workset to open and go straight to the last viewed on your local model/platform. Alternatively, if you select "Editable", you wall open all what has been set to editable; if you pick "Select" (which is set by default), you go to the "Open Workset" screen dialog which you pasted to select from it. (Check "Workshared" section when you first open the project)
  2. The screenshot you posted is just the default setup you will get if you do not select anything in the OPEN dialog.
  3. If your default Start View (Open Workset dialog in this case)  is not consistant everytime you open your project, it means it was modified by whoever can manage the project (I would assume not just any team member)...One usually can only change the status of worksets that are not owned by another user. On your screenshot there are no owners...so I guess they can be editable by anyone (IDK I can be mistaken) ie. the reason it is randomly changing.

My company has chosen to make standard, "Specify" on open, which worksets to use. So everytime you open a model, the workset dialog opens. We create a new local copy daily from the central file.

We have a behaviour that currently is not explained anywhere I have scoured and so I turn to the forum for insight.

When the model is first created, the workset dialog opens to "Specify", by default, and all of the created worksets are OPEN=YES by default. This may last a week or two. Then after a user crashes, it seems that from that point and time on, the central file has defaulted to OPEN=NO except for what seems like a single random workset. I am able to open the central file direct, and audit on the open, and it seems to reset the OPEN=YES for a short time. Maybe 3 days. but at some point, the OPEN=NO default returns. No further crashes have occurred. Further more, it seems after about 3 - 4 weeks, with stable running and no crashing of the model, this OPEN=NO default seems to appear.

I can assure you, we don't have anyone taking the time to close all but one workset prior to doing a sync, so I am not on board with the idea that it is the workset condition of the last local/central model sync. Is there a variable or something of this nature that can be triggered to return the OPEN=YES to be the constant default in the "Specify" on open dialog?

We are seeing the same thing, at random times all but one of the worksets would be shown closed when you open the file. No one is closing them

I've tested it again using 2016 and 2017. I preset the Central File to Specify so the Open Worksets dialog will appear when we create a local file.

I don't see any randomness at all. Revit offers me the same conditions based on what I chose to open or close the last time I created my local file. I see no relationship between what I see and what other users have opened or closed or synchronized or who closed their file last.

I only see Revit paying attention to which worksets were open or closed the last time I created my local file. For example, I closed all Linked File worksets when I created my Local File. After I use SwC and close my Local File I'll find those same worksets are closed (in the Open Worksets dialog) when I create a new local file later. If I change which worksets are closed or open then the next time I create a Local File the combination of worksets will match my earlier choices. Perhaps the hard thing to keep track of is remembering what worksets I closed or opened last time.

FWIW, I create a new local file every time. I never open a previous Local File to continue working. It's faster to create a new Local File than opening an existing one and then using Reload Latest to catch up to changes others have made. It's one open file sequence versus two (open and Reload Latest).

Perhaps I am doing something differently than those of you experiencing the randomness. I'll be curious if we can figure out what that is.

It isnt a randomness as to which worksets are OPEN=YES. It is that they ALL default to OPEN=NO on the load of the dialog box requiring the users to ctrl+A and then click "Open" to make them OPEN=YES.

The issue is how the "Specify" dialog box defaults on display.

Just now, I opened every workset. Saved. Sync'd. Closed. Created a new local copy. Opened it, and when the "Specify" dialog box loaded, all worksets were in the OPEN=NO state EXCEPT the workset I had current when I sync'd.

I am seeking a way for the "Specify" dialog box to display with OPEN=YES by default.

When you open the project and choose the worksets to open did you set them all to Open (Yes)? When you create your next local file it should remember that. What you open or close while the project is open has no influence on the opening sequence.

I know what it is supposed to do. Now you understand the crux of the problem.

It is NOT remembering that when the NEW local file is created. It ALWAYS defaults back to OPEN=NO until I go in and audit the Central file which only lasts a few days.

What sort of user permissions are assigned to your PC's? Is it possible that the necessary user data is being prevented from being saved? How do you create local files?

Thus far we aren't seeing any distinction between admin level accounts and user accounts reacting any different. All the Admin account sessions behave the exact same way... eventually OPEN=NO as default.

We considered that info was being prevented from being saved, however it behaves fine for about 30-40 days, OR, until someone has a hard crash in the model, at which point OPEN=NO becomes the hallmark default for the rest of the project.

We create local files via the pickbox option in the open project dialog box from the central model on the network.

Have you examined the user Revit.ini files to see what workset related info might be getting stored there?
