One shared parameter in several models. Must all checked categories be the same?

Hi!

This is more of a Revit general issue, but I hope that it is OK I put it here anyway. šŸ™‚

I have one shared parameter that is used all through a project with four different Revit models (different disciplines). It is mostly used as a project parameter but also in some nested families. It's a common text parameter, used for filtering out specific objects in specific sections.

Because its job is to filter it's also applied in several filters. We have discovered that the filter doesn't work if the categories differ throughout the project. If the exact same categories are not checked in the project parameters in actual model, as well as for the project parameter in the linked models, as well as the filter itself that we are trying to use it doesn't filter the objects from the linked file.

Is it supposed to be like this? I find it odd that there is a (secret?) relation from the linked files project parameter to the filter in the model where the sheets are created. To make it work all categories that are using this parameter needs to be checked in the project parameter dialog box. Now we need to check Structural Framing in a electrical model and vice versa, it doesn't feel quite like the Revit way I'm used to.

Any input and reflections on this is more than welcome. I'm interested to know what you think of it, is this the Revit way?

Best regards from a rainy Sweden.

It makes sense, in my opinion, that all the categories for which the parameterapply are checked, even if some models do not use some of categories. Because the parameter is not being defined for any of the models exclusively, but for the whole project. And it is the same parameter, anyway, with the same unique ID number, so it makes sense that it needs to be defined in the same way in all the models associated to the project.
