Object not Cutting anything

Hi, when i try to put thi window family in place, it says it is not cutting anything. How do i fix this?

• you are not placing it properly in the wall which should host it.
• You created a wall opening first then trying to place the window
• the walls are too short  or the default window sill is too high that it is not curring wall

The message is basically as it states. The window is not cutting anything. At the location you try to insert the window, there is no wall.

This happens when for example you have at that place an opening in the wall, possibly caused by another window.

You can try to open a 3D view and see what is happening at that location

Hi; I am a beginner to lean Revit 2017 and I am teaching myself.

I am just following the book Revit2017, it is shows me to add a door in the existing wall, but when I pick a door and try to insert it, it gives me this error message:Instance(s) of 0915 x 2134mm not cutting anything.

book doesnt tell me to create an opening before to insert the door, it is just telling me:

go to level 1

on the Architecture tab click the door button

go to Modify and click the Load family button

browse to the doors directory

pick the door

zoom in on the upper left corner of the building

insert the door

but it seems the door level is on top of the level of wall, it doesn't the same as wall level when I look at the 3D view, but I select the Level 1 for both of them. 

would you please tell me step by step what I have to do

You do not need to create an opening before you insert the door. Door families will cut out opening themselves.

It sounds as though your wall does not go through the level that you are trying to insert the door. So if you are trying to insert a door in Level 2, the wall is shorter than Level 2, or if you are inserting the door in Level 1, the wall was created in Level 2. You can check this in an elevation, or in the properties of the wall.

Please change the highlighted value to 0. You walls are below Level 1.

Also - in Properties where you change the numbers - look below that for Top Constraint. Change that to Level 2

Yahhhh, Thank you so very much, that was driving me crazy 😄

so every time I am going to create a new project I have to change those to 0 and level 2?  in AutoCAD before you start drawing you can set the default setup before you start drawing.   Do we have the same option in Revit? and if it is, what is the basic setup? as a beginner, how should I know that I need to change those information, because it doesn't say in the book. (in page  38 is asking to insert a door and doesnt say what I need to check before I insert any families.)

I hope I dont get any more problem in future when I am going to add any other families on my drawing 🙂

By default, Revit should insert walls correctly at Level 1. You can set the Top Constraint to Level 2, or you can leave it Unconnected, depending upon what it is that you are trying to do.

That is because you draw the walls using Structural Wall tool with Depth option chosen, meaning the walls will be drawn from top down.  Use Architectural Wall tool or if you need to use Structural walls, then change from Depth to Height.

I face with another problem 🙂

I am trying Align a window over the Ref plane, but the window keep jumping between the 2 Ref plane line.

- I clicked the Align button

- selected the window 

- first selected the Ref plane line

- Second selected the center line of the window

but as soon as select the center line, the window jump between the 2 Ref line that I have over a curved wall

I need the center of the window goes over the first Ref plane line

What am I missing

Edit the window family - make sure that the reference plane is at the center.

Modify>>Align. When you hover over the middle of the window, the center reference line will light up. Align it to the reference plane.

That is what I did, I select the Modify, Align,I picked the Ref Plane and after the center of the window.
