Nvidia GTX 1080 vs Quadro M4000

Morning all..

 

Has anyone tried Nvidia GTX 1080 with Revit/Fusion/Inventor?

 

It is neither a certified Graphics Hardware nor a recommened one by Autodesk...That being said Autodesk doesn't seem to have tried or tested/Certified and GTX series from Nvidia despite the fact that Performance wise some GTX Cards do beat their equiv. from Quadro!

 

I currently have a Quadro M4000 installed on my Office PC; it is ok but not wow!! Now I am looking at a new home desktop and considering to try the GTX 1080 so any Input would be great (Not comparing Price the GTX is some 150 eruro Cheaper that is a known given for all GTX vs Quadro I think)

Hi Rob, 

 

Ok, so everything below is based on my opinion:

 

I would go for the GTX1080. I also have the M4000 on my office PC, mainly because my company IT department tend to go with what suppliers recommend even if they do not work on the software on a daily basis... Why wouldn't suppliers recommend the Quadro's? Their profit margins are higher with a Quadro spec'ed workstation. 

 

My feeling is that Quadro cards work well or rather are their money's worth in a Visualization Department. I recently had to spec three setups for the aforementioned department and they are happy with the results and speed (With Quadro Cards only because they didn't want GTX cards)... 

 

I'm also going to contradict my last statement by stating that I also do quite a bit of Visualization (Stills, Walkthroughs etc.) on various Visualization software packages and I'm very happy with the performance which I get out of 2x GeForce GTX 760 in SLi. (Old'ish home setup).

 

I also feel that my setup with the 2x GeForce GTX 760 configured in SLi outperforms my office PC with the Quadro M4000 installed. (I mainly work in AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks and with various Visualization packages). 

 

I'm quite confident that you'll enjoy the GTX1080 and what you get out of it. PASSMARK LIST for high-end GPU's. The other thing is, Quadro cards tend to have a very slow decline in price opposed to GTX cards, so purchasing another GTX1080 in a year or so and configuring it in SLi will be an option too. 

 

Long story short, I would go for the GTX1080. I wish suppliers could "lend" you/your company GPU's for testing so that you can fully compare the cards on the software which you use on a daily basis. Smiley Very Happy

Hi Rob, 

 

Ok, so now your question resulted in me considering an upgrade at home. Smiley LOL I started to do some digging apart from my original opinion.

 

THIS POST with professional benchmarks speaks volumes regarding the GTX1080's performance. (For me at least)... The area where it lacks is in SolidWorks, as SW is known to prefer Quadro cards, which doesn't bother me at all. 

 

The point below which I found also puts my mind at ease: 

 

"If you were running OpenGL design apps, you would already know the benefits of the Quadro. Long story short, it is optimized drivers. But this is happening for specific applications.

 

Don’t bother listening to ppl guesstimating or quoting AutoCAD performance…Autodesk products like AutoCAD, Revit, 3DS Max etc have been reworked for a looooong time now to use Direct3D instead of OpenGL, negating most of the benefits of a Quadro card- not that Autodesk was doing much work to coordinate with nVidia or AMD to begin with.

 

Especially AutoCAD has been outpaced so much by modern GPUs, that even build-in IGPs in laptops have no issues. Most glitches are due to the graphic engine of ACAD, not the graphics chip or drivers.

 

Double floating point precision (FP64) is nothing that affects graphic performance, so again, unless you want to compile such code exclusively, it is irrelevant. People that don’t already know they need FP64, should just ignore people guesstimating t hey do need it or that they might need it in the future."

 

THIS POST which I found under the forums Visualization section pretty much leaves me with no choice to stick with a GTX. lol...

hi Rob,

 

I am not an expert with the issue but I recently bought a laptop that uses  a GeForce GTX 1070. I was told with the GTX 10.. series they changed the structure of the chipset and how it is built. It performs much better with the autodesk softwares. It's been working like a charm for me. I use revit and luion and I didn't have any problems at all. Also it was a matter of budget for me and GTX 10.. series computers were better priced.

My experience with autocad when i did curved building using fabcad where i need to calculate pipes lengths around curve building 1mm will make massive impacts in manufacturing modules gtx struggle to show simple lines kept refreshing and lines moves . Some time snaps to curve and show it in different location. Ive used quadro and things different. When you zoom freezes for few seconds and than allow you to zoom more further with absolute accuracy. Im not expert in hardware its my personal experience and im sure some one can explain this

Rob,

 

I am being told that Autodesk does not support the GTX video card and so therefore running an Autodesk product on a non-Quadro workstation is in violation of their licensing agreement.

 

Don't know how this impacts those of you choosing to work on your personal workstations, but in a corporate environment this could be quite a problem.

 

Thoughts?

GTX are not certified but using it does not violate anything.  On the other hand, running Quadros violates your bank account greatly.

For anyone who sees this, if you're curious what is best for certain modeling software theres a company called Puget Systems. they do extensive testing and put their reports out for people to read and then based on the thermals, sound, and performance pick out what combination of CPU, and GPU will do best. for example they did a Adobe premier optimized system for a YouTube and they do the same for Autodesk products.

I Always use quadros but I have to admit it may be because I'm just "snobbish" (or believe what they want us to believe in the ads).

A dealer once told me that for good 3D a 4000 series is not enough, real 3D starts from the 5000 series.

 

I never tried the GTX series but I also wonder if the difference is worth the price.

 

Anyway, no use to install a High end graphics card in a not so high end PC.

Good processor, PCI express SSD's, RAM, Good motherbord,...

It should all perform great to keep up!

 

A friend of mine bought a 30k workstation!

It calculates 20 percent faster than his 'old' one (12k or so).

He is mainly doing simulations and he claims to save 2 hours a day.

You can figure it out yourself.

 

I don't think just upgrading to an expensive quadro will save me two hours a day.

 

For the moment I am doing rather small projects and I am sure a GTX series is enough for that!

I have no problems.

Only Navisworks is becoming quite slow (espescially with rebar).

The refresh in Navisworks is really, really slow when the design has rebar but I don't think that has anything to do with my graphics card.

 

So, I would consider a GTX but if I had to design a football stadion with rebar and have short deadlines I would definetly recommend a very expensive Quadro!

 

It all depends on what you are designing (IMHO).

 

And don't forget, your office PC could 'feel' slower for a lot of other reasons (files on the network, no ssd, heavy virus scanners, bloat software installed by IT departments,...)

My office PC should be a lot faster than my laptop but it isn't !

If I was doing BIM coordination for the entire project, and needed to walk groups through the overall facility, then yeah - you'd need the massive VRAM only found on the high-end Quadros.  But for modeling work, you would be dealing with small, workable models where it wouldn't be a huge difference.

Hi Rob

 

I have now been using a Clevo laptop with:

i9-9900K. ( full desktop cpu ).

GTX1080 mxm.

32 GB RAM.

Extremely powerful laptop.

I'm using that laptop for Inventor 2018.

I often work on assemblies above 8000 parts.

The big difference on how this laptop handles this is Shaded or Shaded with edges.

As Shaded I can throw these assemblies around very well with the Spacemouse.

Almost like I only got one part open.

But if I use Shaded with edges, it almost freezes. And I need to see these assemblies with Shaded with edges.

Just tested one of my assemblies on an HP Laptop with a Quadro P4000, and it handles this assembly very well as Shaded with edges.

 

I have always used Quadro cards, but wanted to try GTX.

And now I have no doubt. Quadro is way better. And I need to get a Quadro again.
