New "Fixtures" Category

There is lots of instances in projects where we need a category which is not casework or furniture because it is a custom item which needs to be fixed to something. For example to a wall - a mirror or corner protector or seismic restraint - in architecture, because we would not consider them as furniture as they need to be fixed in, but they are not casework either. A name that would better suit them as a category would be "fixtures".

In 2022 and higher, Autodesk did add in new categories. Here are the list

• Food Service Equipment
• Medical Equipment
• Fire Protection
• Vertical Circulation
• Audio Visual Devices
• Signage
• Hardscape
• Temporary Structures
• Roads
• Abutments
• Bearings
• Piers
• Bridge Framing
• Bridge Cables
• Bridge Decks
• Vibration Management
• Expansion Joints
• Structural Tendons

For your fixture category, it may cover under vibration management if this is relate to seismic

This is a common topic and as previously mentioned more categories and sub-categories are being added with every release but there will always be a need for more.

One common denominator that has been discussed and commented on is referring to industry guidance documents, we have specific BIM standards in the U.K. and they give guidance for Categorisation of items in model also you have such external references and AIA & RIBA, UNIClass, NBS etc.  

These could offer a reasoning on why it was placed under a Specific Category.

why not use a sub-category for your specific needs? 

If Autodesk introduces a new category (idea forum!), the name should be more distinctive. "Fixtures" could be plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, furniture fixtures, fixture fixtures.....
