Modifying dimensions

I've made some dimensions in my model permanent and locked them, however now i need to go back and change some of them. I've unlocked the required dimensions but when i click on the number to change it, it comes up with a dimension text dialogue box and doesn't let me change the dimension. It seems that once I've made a dimension permanent I can no longer edit it which seems stupid! maybe it's just me. Do i need to change the dimension back to temporary to be able to change it? If so; How do you go about making dimensions temporary again? 

I've used the "reveal contraints" tool to see if there is anything restricting me from modifying the dimension but it doesn't appear to be. I notice when using this tool there are both temporary and permanent dimensions shown but only for some of the dimensions which seems odd. 

Coming from years of experience with Solidworks i'm struggling to get on with the Revit way of adding dimensions and constraints, it seems pointlessly long winded and difficult to keep track of what has and hasn't got dimensions or been constrained.

Select the element and edit the Temporary Dimension that pops up for it.  Sometimes, it'll just changes the Permanent Dimensions to Temporary Dimension (Blue). Those you can edit.  

...I see you got a lot of Hidden Dimensions. Those can be problematic.

I've tried doing as you suggest but no temporary dimensions pop up, maybe i have done something wrong when creating the dimension in the first place? If i delete the dimension and re-add one it automatically turns to a permanent dimension

Get rid of your Hidden Dimensions. Looks like you haven't been pressing "Unconstrain"  when deleting dimensions. 

...Also, you may need to activate Temporary Dimensions on Contextual tab.  Automatic TDs may be turned off by Revit.  She does that with large projects. 

..One other thing: Your screenshots show a lot of padlocks.  I might put my money on those as well.  Could be overly constrained and can't move.

I've deleted all of the hidden dimensions, and also activated the temporary dimensions but this didn't solve it.

Then I had look at the padlocks as you suggested, They should have just been referencing and constraining the columns and doors. I couldn't see anything obvious causing a problem but I thought i'd delete them all anyway to see if that solves it and it did! Still not sure what i had done wrong in the first place but now if i delete a permanent dimension and add a new dimension it is a temporary dimension that i can edit.
