Model in Place Component

I've created a simple, single extrusion for a countertop. I've drawn symbolic lines and unchecked the "Visible" box for the Extrusion. When I do this the symbolic lines show up on the floor below and the model disappears completely from the 3d view. What's going on? When the "Visible' box is checked everything is good. Never had this issue before.

Symbolic lines show on the projection plan of the view which they were placed in. You can control their visibility in family editor or edit mode if in-place (example: which level of detail they should show in and which not) the are not part of the actual geometry and they don't show on other views when loaded into the project

The extrusion is the geometry. When you uncheck it's visibility (which you did) it will not show when you load and place it in you model project. If u want it visible you should keep it checked.

You can add a parameter to the visibility so that u can control it later in the project...either by instance or by type

Nothing other than the above is going on. It is a normal behavior

The symbolic lines aren't being projected properly. I modelled and have drawn the lines on my second floor. They show up on the first floor when the extrusion is not visible but show up on the second floor when the extrusion is visible. Well assuming they're showing up on the second floor because they're no longer on the first floor.

If you are sure that you are not looking at an underlay (looking up or down)...the line should Show on the Levels/work plane which you have associated them with.

 

  1. Select the Component then go to Edit In-Place mode
  2. Select All with a corssing window then filter the selction to have only the lines selected
  3. On the Ribbon, Click Edit Work Plane
  4. On the next Dialog select the 2nd Level from the drop down list and click ok
  5. Click the Green tick to Finish Model

They should be on the 2nd Level now (IF they were previously on the first Level)...again make sure you are not looking at underlays in the plan views (symbolic lines do not Show in 3D)

 

This is the only thing I can think of at the Moment...if it is not resolved (this issue), consider adding images or file if possible

I don't know what the issue is, the symbolic lines are set to the second floor Ref.Plane yet still only show up on my first floor with none underlay. Done messing with it haha. Thanks though.

 

Maybe you can help me with another issue. Is there any way to place a wall based component, upper cabinets, on a linked revit file? The shaft walls or my core and shell model are also room walls with casework hung from them.

is the offset when creating the lines set to 0?

Unfortunately that wasn't it. I deleted and recreated the symbolic lines just in case as well.

I would keep the extrusion geometry Visible, and only turn it off in Plan/RCP since you have the symbolic lines to present.

You may need to use a face based family instead of wall based.

I just place a wall and hid it.. a work around til revit allows us to place objects on linked models.

Yep. You can even create a wall that is nearly 0 height to host the wall based components as well.

Or you can Bind the linked model, which converts it from a link to a model group. Then ungroup it. Then you've got real Revit walls and you can host wall-based families onto.

 

Of course you lose the advantages of the link.

if a wall based is a must (cuz it is the family u have in hand and you do not want to model a face based) I would use the copy/monitor tool for the wall from the link...placing another wall on top of the existing one might cause later problems...copy/monitor somehow bedazzles REVIT to believe it is the same wall in one way or the other.

I figured out the issue I was having here as well. It was not the visibility check box I need to mess with. It was the Visiblity/Graphic, and I needed to uncheck the Plan/RCP box. This way in plan view the mass isn't visible and the annotation lines define its location, but the massing and shapes show up in 3D and elevation views.

I am trying to build a custom countertop.  Am working in Revit LT;  there is not a dropdown for 'model in place' under components.  How do I build a custom countertop.  Also - any idea why my cooktop will not sit on to p of my island countertop (from the standard symbol library.  As usual I am on a deadline and cannot get things to work.  It is late so knocking off for now but getting up early --- maybe one of you night owls can help 🙂  THANK YOU!

You can build a custom countertop or anything else just fine using a loadable family instead of a model in place component. Create some ref planes in your project for critical dimensions of the countertop and paste them onto the family.

As for why one thing does not sit properly on another, it is hard to tell because I don't know how they were created. But check its elevation value and try adjusting it. Or go to an elevation view and move it up or down.
