Material visibility graphics in wall family

Hi,

I've created wall units using the component family; see family attached.

Despite setting different materials for two extrusions (one with concrete hatch & GREY background; one with concrete hatch & WHITE / transparent background), however when loading the family in the project only the grey background appears in sections views. See screen grabs attached.

You have set 2 material (different names ...1 in situ and the other precast)

1. (Hidden Lines Display) Both under graphics tab has no background pattern assigned...set one to solid fill 
2. (Shaded/Realistic) Both are using the same material asset, hence under these display mode both elements will look the same. If you want them to also look different when in Shaded/Realistic mode you need to duplicate the material asset and redefine how the 2nd element should look like/appear

I think I followed your steps within my family, however when I load the family into my project it doesn't follow through. Also when I re-open the family (after making the changes) the changes haven't registered.

Do you have this problem when loading the family into a project?

No it works perfectly fine at my end...

1. Did you save changes in the family >>> load into project >> and  overwrite parameters?
2. Did you check the View display mode in the model? is it Hidden Lines or Shaded? should be hidden lines if you didn't fix the assets
3. Under Graphics Tab in Material Editor...is the Use Render Appearance checked or unchecked? should be unchecked

Try to load it in a fresh empty model and check... or upload the model itself (not the family)

You need to change the material in the project, as it has the same name as the material in the family, the edition you made in the family is ok, but the representation of the material is following that of the project.

On a somewhat related issue, is there a simple way to turn off the 'in-situ' part of the component within the project?

I.e. in some views I would like to show both the 'in-situ' and 'precast' parts, but in some views only the 'precast' parts.

Several options

1. Add the In-Situ Extrusion to a subcategory in the family...In the project you can go to Visibility graphics and Switch it off in particular views while lit remains on in other views where that element show. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/Subcategories
2. You can make the in-Situ Extrusion as a nested Shared Family ...when you load the parent to the project you can use either Filters or Subcategories (also useful if you want to schedule the In-situ Separately 
3. If you want it to be a global visibility option, you can add to the in-situ extrusion a Yes No visibility parameter but this turns it on or off in all view at the same time

I would go with option 1 or 1 and 3 combined ...
