Forced to report an annoying bug. The program regularly crashes when trying to apply changes to the material in material editor. No crash report, Revit just freezes for a few minutes then crashes.

Open the Material Manager under Manage to edit materials.  Refrain from editing materials via elements type/instance.

I've also have the same crashes ever since I installed 2022 (including the hotfixes and updates).  Something I do often is duplicate materials, change the properties, and save (boom crash).  It was never a problem for me through release 2018.  Speaking of the materials editor - why is it that when you "duplicate" the material in one screen, you have to open another screen and click on another button to make the "duplicated" material independent from the first??  Seems dumb.  I don't know how I figured the process out, but it must drive new people crazy.

Could be hardware related. Or due to an Add-in. Or maybe something in your Warning List needs to be resolved. Or maybe the Project just needs some routine maintenance (i.e. Audit, Purge All, etc.).

...how are you managing your Materials? Locally or remotely?

Thanks for the response.  Unlikely to be hardware related - I have two different extremely capable computers and I have the same results on both.  I don't use ANY add-ons of any kind for exactly these kinds of reasons (in general I like to keep things simple - in terms of tools).  I have also tested the problem with a brand new clean Revit architectural template (nothing in it that I have created).  I manage materials locally.  I work alone and only have email support.  I have reported the issue - no response from the vendor.  I'm pretty sure AutoDesk owns this problem.

You mean like a "BUG"?  Interesting that you would go there.  I wouldn't personally.  But still, opening a Support Case can't hurt.  Let us know what they say.

Good luck.

Ha Ha... I'm not sure why I responded in the first place.  I must have had a weak moment when I saw someone else was having the same issue.
