Linking revit files through project base point

Anonymous

I am trying to link 5 revit files onto my 'final project' file. I have aligned up the project base point on all the revit files so that i can link the file into this main one however when I load it in its still not showing in this area.
I also noticed that the building is showing under the topography and i'm not sure how to elevate this up? I have once again tried to play around with the elevation of the project base point but this doesn't seem to work either. I am new to this software so could do with a bit of guidance?

Hi UP

I can share my workflow and hopefully it will help you. This may not be best practice, but it works for me. What version of Revit are you using? This should work with 2018 and later versions.

Taking shared coordinates system out of the equation for a minute and just making sure your links are getting in to the right spot, we'll worry about the SCS later. I'll call your overall project model "Site model".

  1. Check that building 1's PBP is where you need it to be, including elevation (I recommend Level 1 = 0.00)
  2. In the site model: unclip the PBP and move it to match the location of building 1's PBP. Basically I use the PBP as a coordinate marker that I can move around (as long as it's unclipped) and use as a reference to link files.
  3. In the site model: link building 1 as "Project Base Point to Project Base Point". Now you should have the building 1 in the right spot. You may have to orient the building correctly here, then when sharing SCS the information will be transferred to the linked model (to get correct sun settings, etc...).
  4. Repeat the same for all buildings
  5. You may want to put the PBP is the site model in a more appropriate location.

Now you can establish a shared coordinates system in the site model (assuming you haven't already) and share with the linked models.

You moved the Project Base point?, how were the projects linked Origin to Origin?

In that case they would end up different.

Hi

Thank you this helped me to get the buildings into the right position.

I’m still slightly confused with the elevation as whenever I change this on the PBP within each individual file, there’s still no change within the final project file.

I think this has also messed up my elevation views now as well.

Thanks,

Glad that helped.

Those steps should have assigned the correct elevation as well. Are you positive all PBPs are placed at Level 1 at 0 elevation? Also the project might have move relative to your views if you didn't unclip the PBP.

Do you have real world coordinates assign to these PBPs and establish a Shared Coordinates System? If you don't just follow the same steps, but use a relative system (0,0,0).

In all models including the site model do the following.

1 - In an elevation view where you can see levels, show the PBP either from Visibility and Graphics or by toggling Reveal Hidden Items (the bulb). If the point is not at Level 1 (0.00) make sure it's unclipped and move it there.

2 - Manage, coordinates, specify coordinates to a point. This will assign coordinates without moving the project (but always ensure the point is unclipped). If you have coordinates assign them including the elevation.

3 - You shouldn't have to relink, but you may try removing current links from the site and relink by PBP to PBP again. When you share your coordinates system to the other models they will all have the same.

Now that all your models have Level 1 (0.00) (or whatever your Z is) in sync, they should all appear in the correct spot.

I was facing similar challenges with my team mates on a large project and we ended up using these two workflows which did it for us.

Let me know if that helped!
