Linked Structural column not visible in detail view

I have an issue where my (linked) structural model; specifically columns, are not visible in a 1-1/2" = 1' Detail view. I am working in an interior file with a core and shell model which hosts the floors are linked in. This issue does not happen in other views or floor plans. it is not a visibility graphics or view template issue. the column from the linked structural model goes from LVL02 - LVL04 and my detail view is called out on LVL03. The column's family visibility properties show in course medium and fine. All worksets and linked worksets are turned on. one way i can get it to show is by (tab)-selecting the floor in the linked core and shell file and hiding it in the view. although this does get the structural column to show I also need the floor slab from that model to show.

If you can create the Detail Views and Floor Plan Views then the linked structural columns will show.

If you want to keep them as Detail Views, then there are a few options:

- Make the Floor category 100% transparent

- Temporary Hide the Floor, use linework tool and TAB pick the column outline and change it to another type other than <by category>.  Then Unhide the floor.

- Duplicate the view, isolate the column, and overlay two views on Sheet.

- Use a detail component of the same column type

thank you I think I am just going to use a filled region trace over top the column outline. I hope this is resolved in newer versions of revit. I am in 2015. I was able to figure out that using a callout of a plan view with the same view template will allow the column to show. it is specifically the callout (detail) that doesnt allow for multi story linked columns to show through other linked floors.

Again thank you,

@ToanDN I remember that you had helped me out with a similar problem - the solution was to edit the column family and check SOMETHING - I forget what? Can you remind me? That worked like a charm!

Great tip but this only allows the columns to be cut in a callout of a Floor Plan. A callout of a Detail View still has the issue where the column spanning multiple floors will not be cut and will not show in the detail view. I have experienced the same issue in newer versions of revit also.

Thank you all for your help but i think my options are either to trace the column with a filled region. Or redraw the callout using a callout (Floor Plan) and then copy the 2D elements over to the new view and place that view on my sheet.

I have gone with tracing for now, but in the future where I know a column will want to be visible I will use a callout (Floor Plan)

Cheers, and thank you for the fast responses.

I have access to the steel families. that box is checked and it still does not work for me. Remember i am using floor slabs from 1 linked model and steel from a second linked model. the steel is spanning as would be constructed lvl 02 +4' to lvl 04 +4' and i am taking a callout on the third floor. I could be missing something but at this point I just need to power through.

Thanks for checking into it in more detail though.

I can't believe this is still an issue in 2020, probably in 2021 as well.  Maybe Autodesk will see this and fix it...probably not.
