Linked models coming in with solid fills - changing vis/graph settings only gets me halfway

Hello, I'm having trouble with the display of a linked model.
In the picture below, you can see that I like to work on a CAD-colored background to help with eye strain. Unfortunately, the linked model (left) is coming in blazing white in areas that it shouldn't be, and doesn't appear to be within its own model.
On initially looking for a solution, it was recommended that I make sure that all materials have been imported from the linked file to the host - that has been done, but nothing changed.
I can sort of get around it by going through Visibility/Graphics and telling the linked model to use the 'object styles' of the linked model, but then I'm unable to change anything about how it displays, such as overriding linework on the fly per view.
Does anybody know where the white is coming from? Is there a step in the imported materials process that I'm missing? I'm starting to feel silly because I could just change my background and try to ignore it, but I'm sure there's a way. Thanks for any help!
