You can override the appearance of link file via the controls found in Visibility/Graphics. If what you do isn't present their you might be able to override by element via the right click options assuming you can tab/select the element(s) you want to alter.
You can't change the substance of elements defined in an external file, you'd have to change the element in that element's file directly.
