How to add two doors at the same location?

Hello All,

Here is my situation: I'm the structural designer currently working on a project where the architect and I work on the same shared file. No linked models, we share the same file.

The architect placed doors and windows using their own families that show the net opening between the frame. I want to use our own families that show actual wall openings.
Is it possible to hide the arch. family and the opening it makes on my structural sheets and place my family instead?

Usually when architect and structural engineer work on the same file, it is recommended to use Worksets. 
I don't think it is possible to place your own family "over" the door family of the architect, because the door of the architect is already cerating void in the wall. 

If you don't have an option to work on a linked, I would suggest either:

- the Architect modifies his door family so that it has a void of an actual opening.

- that you use Cut or opening tool to cut the rest of the area around the door for the actual opening: this is probably not recommeneded as it represents a lot more work, and I would say it is not efficient, especially when it comes to changes. 

- Optional: maybe you could also try the workflow, that you in the Workset Structural you insert the Opening in the wall first, and the Architect inserts the door which is "face-based" and not "Wall-based" - thus the architect can place a door on the face of the wall rather than "in" the wall.

Yea I would not just place another door on top of their doors. I think the two of you need to come together and try to develop a single family (or families) that meet your needs.

Are you in the same office, or are you a consultant?

This is my first project with that setup. I creating my worksets, but It doesn't help with the opening issue.

-I like your idea of modifying the door family. I try that.

-I tried using the "opening" tool, but It always want to delete the door family to have the rough opening I want

-I like the workflow you suggested. I'll try to talk to the architect drafter to see if we can do it.

I got that. Trying to work on modifying the family will be a better thing to do.
