Lights not working

I am trying to add lights. 

I can add plugs and carriage lights just fine, but pendant lights end up upside down and connected to the floor. It won't let me place can lights at all. 

I added in a ceiling. I don't know what I am missing.

Did you try to do this from a ceiling plan view?

I did try that, but then I can't see the plugs...
