Lights not placing

I am having a hard time placing light fixtures in Revit. It will only let me place in the 3D view but not the ceiling view. My teacher and I messed with the view range and that didn't work, I can't hide my ceiling because Revit won't let me get it back after.  please help ASAP!

Are you placing them in a Ceiling Plan?

Yes and no because in the ceiling plan is where I can edit them and I'm just plotting them randomly in the 3D model because that is all that Revit will let me.

This may not be the main point of the post, but what do you mean Revit won't give you back your ceiling after you hide it?

I'm fairly certain this is a visibility thing. I'm guessing your ceiling is already hidden in your RCP so you don't have anything to host your lights to in that view.

My teacher and I tried the visibility settings and that didn't work. I have only been using Revit for a month now so I am not 100% sure how everything works.

Check if the lights are ceiling hosted or level hosted, this usually causes issues.

if ceiling hosted they need to be in a ceiling view as they will attach to this.

if level based they will be offset from this level and then usually go outside the view range and not visible in a floor plan

Go to your RCP, and click the Reveal Hidden Elements icon. Look around for your ceiling. I'm guessing its hidden.

Please be clear what exactly is going on. Hosting to what? Ceiling, or level, or what? What type of family (hosting type, or share the family). 

Visibility may be another issue. If  you can't see the ceiling, you can't place on it. Or are they placed (visible in 3D), but just not visible in your RCP view?

If you use face based families then choose Surface instead of Vertical Surface when placing them in a ceiling plan.

On hiding the ceiling, why would you need to do it?

Are you saying that your teacher messed up the RCP View Range and you don't know how to correct it?

Make sure your ceiling is a compound ceiling type.
