Lighting fixture casts shadow on IES light source

Hi,

I am creating a lighting fixture using an IES file as the light source, however the model of the fixture casts a shadow on the light output from the IES file. I want there to be no shadow from the fixture and for it to only render the light from the IES file.

Turn off the modeled geometry.

...where's you light source positioned in relation to the Geometry?  Post the Family.

Hi,

The light is positioned behind the geometry where it is positioned in the actual fixture.

What I want to be able to do is to have the light output from the IES file to go through the geometry as if it were transparent. I am not sure if there is a way to do this without actually making the fixture transparent.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but in order to be able to change the light fixture housing Material, you need to associate the geometry's "Material" Parameter to a Parameter in the Family Types Editor.  Then you can change it to whatever Project Material you want to inside the Project.

NO MATERIAL (THE WAY IT IS NOW):

GLASS MATERIAL APPLIED TO HOUSING GEOMETRY:

SOLID MATERIAL WITH SELF-ILLUMINATION APPLIED TO HOUSING GEOMETRY:

Hi. I want it to render as if the material was fully transparent but you would still be able to see the material. By this I mean that the light output would be similar to glass but the appearance of the fixture would be a solid with no transparency.

It seems like this may not be possible to achieve.

You could do this with a Material Appearance Asset that has a Self-Illumination property.  What's the Material in real life?  Look for an Asset in the Browser that has the properties of that Material.

Long and short: it's doable in Revit.  Don't give up.

Here's a quickie for you. Reflectivity, Transparency, Self-Illumination and a pretty Tint added to the plain, old  "Generic" Asset -- the default Asset Revit uses when you create a New Material.   Try it out yourself.
