Joist tag is too far from joist

I recently modified our steel joist family and now when I try to tag it without a leader, the tag is about 1.7 times farther away from the joist than it used to be. The only change I made in the family is to switch Symbolic Representation from "From Project Settings" to "From Family." I did this so that the joist would always show up with the same linetype regardless of its "Structural Usage."

I don't want to change the tag family because I also use this tag for steel beams. And I don't want to duplicate the tag family because then I'll have to constantly switch back and forth between the two. I know I can just shift the tags after placement, but any ideas on how to make this work correctly the first time?

Maybe you should have changed the Object Styles to make different structural usages using the same graphic style and leave the joist family Symbolic Presentation by Project Settings.

Thanks for the reply! What you're describing is the way we used to have it. But I don't want to have to keep changing the Structural Usage to get the correct linetype. I want all joists to just have a certain linetype regardless of their Structural Usage.

Keep changing structural Usage?  No you only to do it once via Object Styles, expand the structural framing subcategories and make all the usages the same graphically.

I don't want all of my structural framing members to show up as the same linetype. I want steel beams to show up one way (5 Solid) and steel joists to show up a different way (4 thickness, Double Dash 3/8" pattern).

I see. So you commit to use that framing member family only for joists and nothing else? You could still keep it "by project settings" and set up a filter by family name or type to override the joists in views.

Great idea! It doesn't solve the issue of why the tag isn't in the correct place after switching Symbolic Representation to "From Family," but that is a great workaround to do what I need. Thanks so much!
