i am new to revit and am doing a tutorial that shows the elevation views in the pane on the left.  all i see on the left is:  floor plans, cieling plans, and 3d views.  can someone help?  is it hidden for some reason?

What Template did you use to start the Project?  If you are sure they are not there, they could be easily created.

Go to View Tab and see:

..You sure you don't see this?  Maybe the Category isn't expanded. Press the "+" symbol if so.

thank you.  yes i did that and works great.  however it is strange that at the beginning of the new project it actually shows elevations on the left pane.  then as i add walls the default elevations disappear  and i have to recreate them.  this is really annoying.  any idea why it would do this?

You could have deleted the elevation symbols on the plan view and that would delete the actual elevation views from the project browser.
