Is there a way to cut an extrusion by a loaded void family

I have created a stringer in a generic family. It should have some parametric holes on it where there are steps. For defining a parameter for the number of holes, I had to create an array of them. It also has to have a parameter for the distance between the holes. As I can not align the arrayed holes to the work planes I can not create these holes in the same family. The only solution I could come up with was creating one set of holes (voids) in a separate family and loading them into the stringer family. But when I do that it does not cut the extrusion.

Why not to create the voids in the same family of the stringer and create the parametric relations there?

I tried to create an array of voids but it did not work. My problem is that I can not align and lock arrayed voids to a work plane to define a parameter for distance between them.

Accepted solution

Create a void in a face based family, cut the host with it. Nest it in another face based family, array and setup spacing parameter. Nest this second family to your stringer family and associate spacing parameters.
