Is it possible to put openings or voids in a divided surface?

My tutor is suggesting that I add small narrow openings around my building to allowing for more natural lighting. However, working with divided surfaces is pretty difficult and wondering if anyone has a possible solution?

You can use a void to cut the surface prior to divide it.
