Is it possible to put lights without hosting it

Hello,

I have received a project from a consultant and the file does not have ceiling on it. Creating ceiling could be risky because it might have some bulkheads or other stuff on it. I was wondering if I could put the lights without hosting it . If there is any option to specify the mounting height for the lights. ANy idea please?

Ya know, I hadn't thought it out that far. I was thinking of creating a workplane at the ceiling level for the hosted families.

So, you can skip that and just host families to the floor and assign an offset that corresponds to the ceiling? I wonder if the offset of the ceiling could be monitored from the arch link and applied to the appropriate fixtures.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

That's why I suggested just making a ceiling level.

You can certainly host light fixtures to any workplane you like. You can certainly give them an offset from that workplane. I just find it most easily handled by putting them right on a ceiling Level. Then you can just change the height of the level if you want to move all the fixtures up or down a bit.

You, or the OP, may find compelling reasons to go another route. Like maybe you don't want another Level that you're going to have to manually hide in a bunch of other views, or something like that. It's great that we've got options.

I tried a couple different OOTB lighting fixture families and they cannot be assigned an offset from the host.

You can only Offset non-host families or work plane based families.
