Insert STP files into Revit without using AutoCAD?

How can I insert STP files into Revit without using AutoCAD as an intermediate step?

I have the full version of Revit Architecture (not MEP or Structure, not Revit LT), but I only have AutoCAD LT.

Steps I'm finding online require me to insert the STP file into standard AutoCAD first before being able to insert or link it to my Revit model. I can't do that in AutoCAD LT - it's just 2D.

I haven't spotted any recent updates that show a direct pipeline from STP format to Revit, you're unfortunately stuck using intermediaries. The first link shows some alternative autodesk products you can use if they are part of your subscription collection.

There are also third party apps and online file converters, just be careful what sites you explore for that as they range from okay to suspect.

this issue with step/stp extensions is ridiculous. One needs AutoCAD to convert these to dwg in order to import/link it to Revit. Then when you need to export step/stp, AutoCAD is not enough; you need AutoCAD Mechanical to do the job.

Hi @ShieldIt

I am pleased to announce that a new version of Revit 2024.2, was released on November 8th, 2023. This release includes a new feature that allows for import of STEP files into Revit. You can find more information on Autodesk Revit 2024.2 is Now Available.

In the latest release of Revit 2025, support for linking STEP files is now available. More information can be found on Import/Export STEP files (What's New in 2025). I am looking forward to hearing back from you if that resolves your issue.

Hello Amelie Janetschek,

We are also trying to learn how to open STP files in Revit and after reviewing the solutions above it doesn't seem to work. I have also received instructions that we must open the Step file in AutoCAD first, Save as DWG then import in Revit and that also is not a option as the AutoCAD does not give us the option to open a Step file. Additionally the AutoDesk support team questioned the screenshot of your response saying you can open it directly in Revit.

You need to import the file into AutoCAD, not open it.

Hi @joey_stokes,

Thank you for posting your question! I would like to understand what you mean by opening a STEP file in Revit.  The workflow I mentioned above pertains to importing and linking STEP files. The import feature is available starting from Revit 2024.2, while the link STEP file feature is available from Revit 2025 onwards. Please note that Revit LT versions do not support the import and linking of STEP files.

Here is a description Importing CAD Files how to import a STEP file. Please let me know if that resolves your issue and I am looking forward to hearing back from you.

I can confirm that the step file import into Revit works in 2024 & 2025. It would be great if Revit recognised different elements in step files (same as Navisworks does) so that there would be the possibility of hiding certain elements; and publishing coordinate to linked step files. For that, one does require AutocadMEP to edit the file. One thing I noticed is that when step file is imported into a family and then to a project, it will slow down the project more than when the step file is directly imported into the project.

sorry, I forgot to add one important thing - if you import a step file into a project, you can cut it in plan, however the bottom view range will be ignored and you'll see all levels below. If you import it first into a family and then into a project, the view range will apply to the step file too.
