Insert ReCap point cloud into Revit 2016 error message

I'm working with ReCap 360 Pro and Revit 2016.

I've tidied up and optimized, a point cloud in Recap. I've deleted much of the point data, but I have not removed any of the original mirror balls.

When I attempt to insert the point cloud (.RCP) into Revit, I get an error message:

"Unable to create a Point Cloud instance. The file may be an incompatible format or corrupt."

This is my second try with tidying up the entire point cloud .RCP and then attempting to insert it. When I tried to import the untouched .RCP, Revit said I was able to successfully, but I couldn't find out where it went. I stretched the Section Box for about a mile in each direction and still couldn't locate the supposed point cloud ( all visibility settings were switched 'on'). I wouldn't be able to use the scan in its entirety anyways.

Any ideas would be appreciated. This is the first time I've received this error whilst operating ReCap with Revit.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

ChristopherInsert Error.JPG

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for posting on our forum.

Did you try linking the same point cloud file in Revit 2015?

I would be happy to take a look if you would like to post a sample file for troubleshooting. I can send you a private folder to upload.

We will also require your journal to test further.

Thank you and we look forward to your reply update.

Thank you for your reply.
Please tell me the best way to share a point cloud with you.
The ReCap file I have, is about 51 scans. It crashes when I try to export as a .rcs. I'm not sure if I'd be able to share the .rcp file with you, without a link to the 10 gigs of scan data.
Also, you suggested Revit 2015. I do have that software. I also have Revit
2017 and 2018. Would either of those be better? I know as ReCap have moved forward in its versions, the usability has greatly improved. Could the same be true with ReCap's operability with the most recent Revit versions?

Thank you again for your response. I appreciate your time.

Sincerely,
Christopher

Hi @Anonymous

We have encountered similar cases where a large number of point clouds results in crashes.

The recap file seems to be huge, Can you try removing some point clouds from your Revit project to see if the crash still occurs?

Please see here for information on Autodesk® ReCap / Autodesk ReCap Pro version 4.2.0.2

We can test your file to troubleshoot issues. I have sent you a private folder to upload, let me know if you can access the folder.

As requested earlier please post your journal.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Hello Viveka,

What's happening is, the point cloud can import into Revit, without error, as a whole-unaltered point cloud (from ReCap). However, if I try to do any cleaning, by deleting points and optimizing the point cloud in ReCap first, then, when I try importing an optimized point cloud into Revit, I get the error message I posted. I receive the same error message while trying to import the modified point cloud in; Revit 2017 and 2018 as well.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Christopher

I appreciate the link for the ReCap upgrade.
My office has a strong permanent fire wall, which makes it challenging to install software from outside. When we installed installed ReCap 360 Pro, we figured out a work-around. I can't remember how we were able to do it before. I'll talk with our IT department.

Thank you for your help.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for clarifying!

Please send us your journal so that we can take a closer look at what's causing the issue.

We have similar reports on "Unable to create a Point Cloud instance. The file may be an incompatible format or corrupt."
Please, try to do the following steps:
1. Process the .rcp file in Autodesk ReCap
2. Export to a PTS file
3. Import the PTS file into Revit

Let us know once you hear back from your IT department and if you were able to try any of the above recommendations to help resolve your issue.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Hello Viveka,

I was able to install the version 4 ReCap on my CPU. The new version will not open however.

At the bottom of the start screen while it begins scrolling opening-tasks, it lists "Checking Graphics System" and then crashes every time. I have reinstalled and receive the same error message.

Do you know if there is a large difference in the graphics card requirement for the upgraded ReCap version? I checked my computer, it has a Nvidia Quadro K1100M graphics card. Can You please tell me if you think this is the problem, or if you can think of any other reason that I could be receiving this error?

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Christopher

Hi @Anonymous

Can you try updating the OS with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and let me know if the crash still occurs?

See System requirements for Autodesk ReCap 360 2017

Updating your graphic card driver is recommended.

Hello Viveka,

Thank you for your response. After perusing the requirements, I can see
that my CPU's specs are capable to handle the latest version of ReCap. I do
have SP1 and my graphics card has over 4 Gigs of memory. (I'm sorry for my
confusion earlier). One of the notes about my CPU that falls into the
Minimum system specification category is, that I'm working in Windows 7.

I appreciate any more thoughts you may have that can further my ReCap
installation progress.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Christopher

Hi @Anonymous

I'm checking back to see if you are still facing issues with the installation and inserting the file.

Glad to hear that you have the recommended system requirements for Autodesk® ReCap 360™ 2017

While Windows 8.1 is recommended, the minimum is windows 7.

If you have specific questions, please post to the installation and licensing forum.

I was able to talk to our ReCap specialist, Anil Mistry who suggested you try the following steps. Thank you @anil_mistry

A few questions for you:

1)Does this occur specific workstation? Did you try installing on another workstation?

2) Do you require ReCap Pro or ReCap 360?

3) Can you disable antivirus and try again?

4) Can you try to set the program to run as administrator?

Regards,

Hello Viveka,

My previous version, was Recap 360 Pro.

I was able successfully upload the 2018 version (4.2). I notice the feature
for creating regions is disabled, unless I have the Pro version. Since
uploading the 2018 version overrode my 360 Pro version , I will see what I
can do, albeit ultimately very limited, from the version before.

I appreciate your time. Thank you much for your help.

Sincerely,
Christopher

Hi @Anonymous

You are welcome!

Can you get a screen capture? The web version ReCap 360 is a tool for viewing the point cloud but for creating regions you may need the desktop version.

However, regarding the unavailability of tools in your installed version, and version differences - the ReCap specialists will be able to guide you better - I suggest you post to the ReCap forum for more specific questions.

HERE is some information on how to Create and Edit Scan Regions

You might also consider a ReCap - Civil 3D workflow where Civil 3D has the ability to create a TIN surface from points within RCS format point cloud scan files.
