Insert Point Cloud to Revit

Hi All,

I've been working with point clouds in Revit for a few years already and have a step-by-step procedure on how to correctly insert point cloud to Revit before beginning modeling according to that same point cloud.

Basically, these are the steps:

1. Take some point in the point cloud (if point cloud is geo-referenced - then take one of the ground control points (GCPs) and assign that point to PBP (Project Base Point)

2. Insert point cloud "by shared coordinates"

An even better approach would be to:

1. Insert point cloud to Autocad and draw a contour line (or part of it)

2. Insert this CAD as link ("by shared coordinates") to an empty Revit file

3. Insert point cloud to the same Revit file

4. move CAD to point cloud and "Acquire Coordinates" from CAD.

But I always feel that there might be a better and safer approach.

Do you have one?

Thank you!

1.) Link the PC into a New RVT

2.) Link PC/RVT into Main Project RVT via Shared Coordinates established using Specify Coordinates At Point method.

Regarding step 1:

In what positioning method should the point cloud be linked? Center to Center?

Of course that if my point cloud is geo-referenced (which is usually the case) - I get this warning message:

Regarding step 2:

By "established using Specify Coordinates At Point method" you mean to the PBP? Specify its position according to a known point I have (perhaps Ground Control Point)? Is this is the case then both files have a different coordinate system and I get this message:

Link the Point Cloud/RVT into New RVT via Shared Coordinates Positioning established via Specify Coordinates at Point and picking the UNCLIPPED Survey Point.

To do this, will need to identify the x, y coordinates of a point inside the Point Cloud/RVT, like maybe the corner of a building.  These coordinates are what are inputting into the Specify Coordinates at Point Dialog Box.  As said above, that point picked is the UNCLIPPED Survey Point at its default starting position.

Next, Link via Shared Coordinates Positioning. Revit will throw this message:

ALIGNREVIT.png

Respond to this message by pressing "Align". Link should land in Model with that IDed point (e.g. corner of building) sitting directly atop the UNCLIPPED Survey Point you specified with Specify Coordinates at Point.

You know, if your intention is to model Revit elements (i.e. Walls, Floors, etc.) by snapping to Point Cloud points, you are going to need to insert the Point Cloud (e.g. rcp, rcs) into Revit directly.   Still, you can use the method I mentioned above to establish the Location by Survey Point.

This is my exact intention with pointcloud - to insert in order to be able to model As-Is (walls, doors, windows, floors etc.) by snapping to points in pointcloud.

From your last explanation ("you are going to need to insert the Point Cloud (e.g. rcp, rcs) into Revit directly") - I am not sure if you still recommend to create a Revit file with point cloud only and then link this file to the working Revit file (the one I will be modelling on)?

And, also, in order to create this "Point Cloud/RVT" file how should I link the point cloud in this Revit file (center to center, origin to origin, by shared coordinates)?
