I open an FBX in 3ds Max and split it into pieces. Then I export it to DWG and link it into Revit.
Some of the pieces make it to Revit and some don't. The pieces that do not appear in Revit are smaller (less faces) than the pieces that do appear, I am confused. Is a set of rules to follow to import DWGs from 3ds Max into Revit? I am surprised by the lack of documentation on this.

Depending on the AutoCad versions used this is no longer possible without an extra add-on.
Autodesk removed this feature in native AutoCad 2019.
To do this you need to install the add-on AutodeskAutoCAD2019FBX64.
I did not use AutoCAD to convert the FBX because it is extremely slow and clunky with 3D geometry. Apparently it does not even support FBX import anymore . Usually when I use AutoCAD for 3D it takes minutes to rotate to an angle in 3D, so I avoid it. Also needed to simplify the geometry in 3ds Max.
I just installed AutoCAD to troubleshoot the DWG file. AUDIT did not find errors or rat's nests. The geometry appears in AutoCAD, but only half comes into Revit.
Have a look at the file attached, perplexing. Half of the geometry comes in, but not the other two smaller pieces.
Oh! I got it to come in! I exploded it in AutoCAD. Now it's a bunch of faces.
Kind of annoying, but it works. I just wish I could spit it out of 3ds Max and have it come into Revit without an intermediary explosion in AutoCAD.

...out of curiosity, what's this for?
It's for a secret VR Art gallery project. I am modelling it in a hybrid fashion, half in Oculus Medium (in VR) and half in Revit. This is just parts of it so that it does not reveal the project.
