Hello, I am trying to figure out why revit's contour line doesn't match up with the imported points... I cant find a forum addressing this.
I made smooth contour lines in Rhino with assigned elevations and then exported as a DWG. It looks like Revit is simplifying my lines by skipping tight corners, and I am unable to force the contour line to match the points - the contour line just won't move where i want it to. Why could this be?
What other methods do you use to import topography into Revit for free?

I rarely get exactly the same representation in Revit compared to other input like Civil 3D. I can fine tune the surface so the contours are much closer to the other source but it does take some effort. The triangulation between the points can be seen if you turn it on in visibility/graphics.
I find I can add points at slightly higher or lower elevations adjacent to points and that permits Revit to create smaller triangulation which in turn permits tighter contour path changes. You should also check the Site Settings to make sure you have primary and secondary contour settings that are similar to the contour interval you used in your original. I wrote a blog post and video about fussing with contours.
Also what kind of element is the Rhino source being converted into DWG form? Not all elements are equal in Revit and AutoCAD. For example, Revit does not see AutoCAD points and it doesn't have an equivalent to polylines.
Revit will place points along elements it finds according to the layers you select. If the element it is placing them along is segmented in DWG differently than the original Rhino element that will contribute to it.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I might try DATAEXTRACTION towards creating a Point File to create the Toposurface from.
I'll add to what Steve_Stafford said in his post, that you have to pay attention at the Site Settings . Start, Top and Intervals have to set the contour to follow exactly your curves elevation...For example if your spline is at an elevation of 5.00 meters, then if intervals are at 1.00 meter and the Start and Stop are multiple of 1 meter than you will be sure that one of the contours will follow your spline...
And of cause use all that Steve_Stafford explained in his post (work with triangulation)....

The file looks like the contours are at 1m intervals. When I experimented with the file I was able to get the contours to follow pretty faithfully by adding points to allow the triangulation to be done with smaller triangles (see image). I highlighted the locations I added points. When I was close to a contour I added 100mm and more when I was farther from the lower contour working my way "up" the surface.
A 1m interval is fairly large. Subtle surface features are glossed over at that interval.
